A couple of years ago, I was lucky to review Richard Poche’s last film “Crimson”. It was an entertaining film. It’s been a year and a half, but he’s back with a new film. This time it’s a romantic comedy called “Rescuing Rufus”.
The film is about Rufus, a man who gets dumped by his over demanding fiancé and is force back into the dating scene. When he gets back here with the help of his best friend, who he might have a crush on. What he finds during his dating adventures that their are women who are over sexed, over medicated over perfumed and over demanding. Will Rufus ever find true love or stuck being lonely
“Rescuing Rufus is very entertaining romantic comedy that filled with good storytelling and laughter. Co-Writer/Star/Director, Richard Poche does a very good job delivering a comedy that doesn’t feel like your being hit in the head with repetitive jokes and romantic sequences that go nowhere. It’s different, because you get inside the main character’s head and his way of thinking. He does that, by approaching each of the dream sequences differently with the girl that Rufus‘ with at the time. I liked, how Poche directs those scenes, as you get a glimpse into Rufus’ mind with those sequences. He makes them effective, by adding a black and white or grainy effect to each of them. It makes the sequences stand out, while giving the main character some more depth. Poche also does a good job getting the performances that he needs for this film to be successful considering that he‘s the main actor. He’s able develop good chemistry between him and his actresses and it really shows. He especially has very good chemistry with co-star Stuart Brazell, who was also very good here. The time that the two were onscreen together, you couldn’t help it but you wanted Rufus to end up with her. It’s the chemistry that both Poche and Brazell have with each other that keeps your interest throughout the whole film.
The film also has a very good screenplay. It was written by Poche and screenwriter Daniel J.W, Hughes. They both do a very good job making this very entertaining and fun to watch. One of the things that makes this screenplay good, it doesn’t feel your normal romantic comedy. The story makes you interested in the character, because you feel sorry for him in the beginning of the film. Then during the course of the film, he ends up finding love in all the wrong places. This is what keeps this from becoming your typical mindless romantic comedy, which you see in most films. The other thing that I liked about the screenplay, the way that the writers handle Rufus’ narration of his thoughts. It does a good job offering insight into the character’s mind that not seen in romantic comedies. It also makes the story interesting, which is needed to keep your interest in the character.
“Recuring Rufus” is a entertaining film that has a good story with funny moments and good performances from Richard Poche and Stuart Brazell.
Review Rating: Four Stars
