Frontier(s) is a French shocker that has been causing a lot of controversy here in the states. The film was originally slated for the 2007 After Dark Horrorfest, but the plans changed when the film was slapped with an NC-17 rating and some theater owners deemed it to gory for American audiences.
The film is about a young woman, who is alone in Paris and trying to look for a way out from the deadly riots that’s happening there. In an act of desperation, she turns to her criminal ex-boyfriend who along his two thugs who pulled off a heist. They begin to escape to the border with the police in high pursuit. Along the way, they find a peaceful inn, in which they decide to hide from them. Soon the inn, they thought was peaceful turns out to be something so horrifying. Soon they are engaged in a maze that is full of tunnels, which a cult of hungry cannibals is out to find their latest meal. Now the criminals are trapped, as they are forced to fight this horrifying cult before they become their latest meal.

No wonder why After Dark Films weren’t allowed to this film during the 2007 After Dark Horrorfest. I know that Frontier(s) is almost basically like Hostel, Saw, or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre rolled into one but I really enjoyed this film a lot. This film was very shocking and ultra-violent film that was intense and will satisfy gorehounds alike. This film did have a couple of moments where I had to cover my eyes, for a second. That’s what those films are supposed to do and that’s how they can be effective. Writer/Director Xavier Gems creates this gloom and doom atmosphere that stay with the film throughout. It also contributes to the intense atmosphere throughout the film. He also does a good job directing his actors, especially with the family, as they were frightening and very creepy.
Gems’s screenplay was also good. His development of the story and his characters here were good. I liked how he used the political tone of fictional France as a backdrop to the film. I used the word fictional France, as it’s definitely taking aim at the current administration here in the states. But back to the backdrop part, it’s used pretty well, as it doesn’t try to change the tone or the purpose of the film. Gems also does a good job of not making this film boring or predictable. He achieves this, by keeping the action intense and the story frightening. He also makes sure that the violence feels realistic, while the moments were scary at the same time. The screenplay also has suspense, which is needed for a film like this to succeed.
Frontier(s) is a very a very frightening and suspenseful film that will make you want to check into that hotel.
