Warner Bros has shut down both Picturehouse and Warner Independent Pictures today, and decided to pick up their remaining films that they were funding. In a statement issued today, it reads, “With New Line now a key part of Warner Bros., we’re able to handle films across the entire spectrum of genres and budgets without overlapping production, marketing and distribution infrastructures. After much painstaking analysis, this was a difficult decision to make, but it reflects the reality of a changing marketplace and our need to prudently run our businesses with increased efficiencies. We’re confident that the spirit of independent filmmaking and the opportunity to find and give a voice to new talent will continue to have a presence at Warner Bros.”

I think this is bad. Going from memory, I believe both Picturehouse and WI had a good track record of quality pictures. New Line...not so much.

I'm guessing, though, that this is much ado about nothing. Most likely, it will be the same players, just with different titles and company credits. Hope so, anyway.

Just another example that the major studios just don't care about well-crafted film made outside the studio system.

My initial reaction to this is depression. This feels like a sad thing for the movie world as the smaller films keep getting squeezed out. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe something good will come out of this, but I'm not sure.
