Wicked Lake recently had the honor to screen at the 2008 Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, along with movies like REC (which is being remade for American audiences under the title Quarantine), Let the Right One In (which won Best Narrative Feature at the Tribeca Film Festival, and being distributed by Magnolia Entertainment) All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, Midnight Meat Train, Repo: the Genetic Opera, and Dario Argento’s Mother of Tears.
The film is about a young man named Caleb (Marc Senter) who encounters a woman who is posing nude in his art class. He then, ineptly gets to know this woman while walking her home to her house where she lives with her hot roommates. When Celeb returns home, his own brothers and a wheelchair-bound veteran, abuse him for being home late.
The next day, the women (Robin Sidney, Eryn Joslyn, Carlee Baker, Eve Maur
o) go on a road trip for a getaway weekend in the mountains, where they can relax and have fun. But right on their trail is Caleb and his family who are looking have more then just a little fun, as they stalk the women. Later in the evening, Caleb, his brothers and the veteran crash the women’s fun and relaxation, as they take the women hostage. While that’s going on, a couple of cops (Tim Thomerson, Michale Esparza) are investigating a murder scene, which they find a person that has been murdered. During their investigation, of that crime scene, they find a newspaper with the picture of the exacted lodge, where the women are staying. Soon as the stroke of midnight approaches, the hostage-takers will soon discover the women’s secret, as the tables will turn and things are about to get wicked and bloody for the hostage-takers, as there will be no way out for them. The film also has appearances from Al Jourgensen (who also composed the film’s score and frontman for the band Ministry), Will Keenan (aka. Damien DeKay) (Tromeo and Juliet), and Angela Bettis (May and the TV remake of Carrie).
I’ve been wanting to see Wicked Lake since hearing about it on fangoria.com. My interested with the film kept growing with the fact, it played at Fantasia and the film’s very positive reviews from major horror publications online. This film also has everything. Hot women, interesting story, and Mr. Jack Deth, himself Tim Thomerson. There was also skepticism with the fact that Women’s Studies another female oriented horror film that I had high hopes for, until it turned out to be a disappointment. Thankfully, I didn’t have to relive Women’s Studies all over again.
Wicked Lake is one very wicked horror film with very hot wicked women. Director Zach Passero does a very good job making this film very twisted and horrifying. He does that by making the action so surreal that you feel like your watching a David Lynch movie without all the gore at times. Also, Passero makes the action so demented that my interest level
was very high throughout. I thought, he also did a very good job making this film very gory with all the weirdness going on. The gore effects were handled very well, as it made the film fun to watch. Passero also has a very good score from Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen, which adds a wickedness element to the film. His direction of the actors was very good. I liked how, Passero directed the female leads especially, as they were one of those horror villains that you root for, as there’s really no good guys in the film, except for the cops. He also did a very good job with getting their performances down, as they were not just there for eye candy and T&A. They had very good chemistry with each other along with their male counterparts and they also added personality to their characters, which make their characters so likeable in the film.
The screenplay written by Adam Rockoff (Author of the book, Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of Slasher Films) and Chris Sivertson (yes, it the same person that directed the critically panned Lindsey Lohan film,”I Know Who Killed Me”) was surprisingly very good. The film’s story was very dark and twisted. One of the things that they did right was not to make this film a senseless T&A gorefest, which made this very enjoyable. This film could have senseless but it wasn’t. They do that by creating characters that are interesting and sometimes weird. The film also has some shock
ing scenes that grabs your attention and makes you interested in the story of what the screenwriters are trying to tell. Some of the film’s characters and scenes were twisted, as it helps make it feel like one of those fun grindhouse films. The screenwriters also developed the female characters very well, as this was done much well than in Women’s Studies (a film I reviewed a couple of weeks ago in my Reviews From the Horror Chamber column). The main difference in this movie from Women’s Studies was the fact that the female characters didn’t feel clichéd, as the writers made sure that they had personality to them and they also establish a relationship between each of females, so that you pretty much want them to off everyone. Also, the writers set up the violence in the film very well. It’s done in a shocking way that keeps your interest while satisfying a gorehound’s bloodlust. If there was one tiny problem with the screenplay, it was the fact the detectives weren’t developed very well, as it felt like that they just popped in midway through without any back story, as the screenplay really didn’t spend much developing the characters and there was no reason why they were trying to find these girls. This is only a minor problem to very, very effective horror film.
Wicked Lake is a very dark and twisted horror film that will make you cheer for these wicked babes.
Wicked Lake will be hitting DVD selves on October 2nd from Media-Blasters
