Heya Arcaders and Readers!
For those of you who did not catch my post yesterday, this is a new segment I am starting here on FilmArcade.net, just one of the many new things that will be coming your way during the Blogger to Wordpress transition. Basically, I will type a question, and you guys can respond to it via a comment. Type as much as you want, and feel free to leave as many comments as you want.
The purpose of this is to unify our FilmArcade community. What I would like to see in the FilmArcade comment logs are interactive conversations between our writers, administrators (yes, that includes you, Tony), and of course, our readers. Feel free to leave your thoughts on the question. I WANT EVERYONE TO PARTICIPATE!!! We had some participation yesterday... (Thanks, Linda and Jerry!!!), but I would really like to see much more of it. I want to see conversations and possibly, some debates and arguments! This way, all of our readers and writers can get to know each other a little better, by sharing their thoughts and ideas about certain subjects (THUS UNIFYING US!!! YAY!!!). Feel free to argue with one another. In fact, it's encouraged! The more people who participate, the better! In fact, I want to see EVERYONE leave their thoughts. So get to it, folks! Your question is below.
Sorry it's so late in posting this. But regardless, here it is. If you didn't comment on yesterday's question, feel free to go back and do so.

For me, this has to be a tie between "Tropic Thunder" and "The Dark Knight".
I had been anticipating "The Dark Knight" for a long time, actually, since probably about January, when "Cloverfield" came out, and everyone was talking of how 2008 was going to be an amzing year for movies, especially during the summer. (Wow... it seems like Cloverfield came out so long ago... Damn. 2008's almost over. Where the hell did the year go?)
Anyways, back to my point, "The Dark Knight" had a lot of hype going into it, and actually, was being talked up for quite some time. And, after going to see the movie, I have concluded that it lived up to it's potential. It was everything I expected it to be. I was blown away by the action-packed film with amazing special effects and a once-in-a-lifetime performance by Heath Ledger, God rest his soul. I am definately thinking Oscar noms. Ledger for his outstanding performance as "The Joker", and the film itself, I would definately consider for best picture.
As for "Tropic Thunder", it is probably one of the funniest movies I have seen of all time. Iron Man (Downey Jr.) did an awesomely funny job of portraying a black man, and Tom Cruise's cameo was unforgettible. I am still laughing at Tom Cruise right now as I type this. This is a funny one that will be hard to forget. I think it will be awhile until I see a funnier one, although I hear Hamlet 2 is quite a comedy.
Honorable Mentions:
Definately Pineapple Express (for comedy. It wasn't what I expected, but it was extremely funny. It doesn't stand a chance against "Tropic Thunder", but it is definately my second favortie movie of the summer.
Also "Get Smart". One of the first movies I saw this summer, I liked it a lot.
Oh, and of course, Iron Man.
WORST: The worst movie I have seen this summer, was "Mamma Mia". I thought it looked good, but it sucked. I hated it. The breaking out in sing song every 2 lines in the script was annoying. I could not sit through this. (I bet, however, if I had saw "Meet Dave", my opinion for worst summer movie would be different. Or "Disaster Movie" for that matter... But I stayed FAR away from those two. Plus, I refuse to give the bastards at "Disaster Movie" any more money.
Comments?
It's a tough one, since I liked The Dark Knight a lot, but there is a film that rivals it for best film of the summer and year, so far and might little than that film. It’s a little known film that was released from IFC films. That film is "In Search of a Midnight Kiss" which is in limited release and on IFC on Demand. This was a film that I was interested in seeing after hearing about it somewhere, on the Internet. This film reminds me of Singles, where it focuses on people who want relationships and the yearning to be loved. But what make this film very good were the performances from Scoot McNairy and Sara Simmonds (Best Female Performance this year, so far). Their chemistry with each other was great. The film also has great direction from Alex Holdridge, as he captures the city of Los Angles, so beautifully. This is a film people should check out, if you have you have IFC on demand or playing at a theater near you. To read more of my full review of the film, you can goto: http://www.filmarcade.net/2008/08/in-search-of-midnight-kiss-review.html
My Top 10:
1. Wall-E - Do I REALLY need to explain this again?
2. Wanted - The most fun I had all summer and I didn't even have to use a condom.
3. Kung Fu Panda - Amazingly awesome. Too bad it had to come out the same year as Wall-E.
4. Hamlet 2 - I'm still laughing at this movie. Only the best can do that.
5. Hellboy 2 - Veryyy overlooked. It's more deserving of that 500 million than The Dark Knight is.
6. Tropic Thunder - Very funny. Robert Downey Jr owns this movie.
7. The Dark Knight - I really don't remember too much of this movie... except for that magic trick. Told ya.
8. Pineapple Express - Danny McBride owns.
9. Death Race - The only top ten list where you will see Death Race on. I rock.
10. Iron Man - The only reason why Iron Man isn't placed higher is because I didn't find the villain to be villainous enough. If there was a real villain, this movie probably could have been up three or four spaces.
Wall-E, you know my thoughts.
Fuck. I forgot all about Wanted. But deff one of my favorites on my list. I agree with you there.
Kung Fu Panda I didnt see, nor did I care to. I didn't see Death Race or Hamlet 2 either.
I agree with Tropic Thunder, Pineapple, Wanted, and Iron Man being in your top, however, I don't quite agree with the placement.
First, I don't Wall-E deserves to be #1... but I'm not going to get into this again. I agree with Wanted being up there. What gets me is the fact that you have Hellb oy 2 and Kung Fu Panda listed above Tropic Thunder and Batman. I didn't see Kung Fu, but I saw Hellboy. And I liked it, but it's not one of my favs. I think Tropic and DK should be higher up on the list.
For me, top 3 are DK, Tropic, and Wanted.
Honorables are Iron Man, Get Smart, and Pineapple. NO Wall-e or Hellboy, although I generally liked them both to a degree. But not best of the summer.
Anthony, thanks for the comment. I didn't get to see that one... But after reading your review, I'll have to check it out!
You're really missing out on Kung Fu Panda dude.
All I can say is that Hellboy had everything The Dark Knight didn't have. Humor, beautiful scenery, and amazing creatures... and you know that too. Those creatures look fucking awesome.
Lmao. I'm not that into animated films, unless it brings back memories of past favorites. For example, If it were Toy Story 3, I would be there in a heartbeat.
Actually, Ratatoullie was the exception to this.
Oh and Hellboy was a good movie. I will agree, I enjoyed it a lot. (and not just because I had chinese food in my lap)..
It just doesnt rank with TT or DK in my books. They both blew me away. Or even Wanted. Not even close. And as for Kung Fu, I'll see it sometime... I'll put it on my Netflix que when i get a chance (if i remember).
The Dark Knight, Hellboy II, Tell No One, Pineapple Express, Iron Man, Red Belt, Son Of Rambow, Wanted, Traitor, Wall* E, Frozen River, Gonzo, Elegy, Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Man On Wire are some of the films that I enjoyed this summer. There are others, but these were very good, but Wall*E is my favorite of the year because it was very moving.
WALL-E and THE DARK KNIGHT. In that order. As far as I'm concerned, no other movies came out this summer.
Now go ahead and ask what the worst movie of the summer was.
Yes, SPEED RACER, you neon anal bead, it just so happens I AM looking at you.
I guess my worst would be this too:
1. The Love Guru
2. The Happening
3. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
4. Journey to the Center of the Earth
5. Mamma Mia
I actually really enjoyed Speed Racer, just because it was so different from all of the other summer blockbusters this year.
I was dying to see Man on Wire, Baghead, American Teen, and Tell No One this summer, but I never had the chance to.
My top 3 films would have to be THE DARK KNIGHT, IRON MAN, and PINEAPPLE EXPRESS. Those are the three films I was anticipating the most and they still exceeded my expectations. I would watch those films again in a heartbeat. Can't wait when they arrive on DVD. I also liked WALL-E and TROPIC THUNDER as well. And I don't get the total hate for MAMMA MIA! Sure it wasn't the best musical in the world but I found it fun. If anyone was really expecting that to be on a CHICAGO/HAIRSPRAY level truly missed the point about an ABBA musical.
Worst films for me? THE HAPPENING obviously. SPEED RACER - what a piece of crud that was. And THE LOVE GURU was just flat out terrible and unfunny.
Most disappointing? INDY 4. After almost 20 years, you'd expect the product to be good with all that time to plan ahead. Instead, we got this? I'll never look at a CGI gopher the same way again!
I don't "hate" Mamma Mia! I was just really, really disappointed by it.
