December 21, 2012: the end date of the Long Count Calendar created by the ancient Maya in Central America. Countless books and websites, magazine articles and newspaper headlines debate its meaning, with enthusiasts in two camps: those forecasting apocalypse—the end of time—and those who see a coming renewal, a rebirth of consciousness.
Using a combination of talking heads, color graphics and stock footage, 2012: Science or Superstition takes us on a journey that ties together spiritualism, prophecy, science, technology, astrology and myth into a compelling debate of the long and short term prognosis for humankind’s survival.
Done in a TV documentary style that is similar to the BBC or WNET, this seventy eight minute plus twelve minutes of bonus footage production would do well exhibited in an IMAX theatre. It is very well written and constructed and I found myself actually feeling fear and foreboding within the first half hour as scientists confirm the ancient Mayan predictions. Fortunately, from there on the filmmakers tie together numerous experts that give us varying interpretations’ of the data; culminating in a consensus that something is going to happen on December 21, 2012, but exactly what form it is going to take we are unsure of.
The most remarkable fact in the film is how the ancient Mayans charted seventy-one year changes of one degree in the stars relation to Earth. From this they hypothesized a twenty-six thousand year cycle that has profound implications for our understanding of historical events as well as for the future if the Earth and mankind. Especially since modern scientists confirm that they were correct. It is generally believed that the planet was designed to sustain one billion people on bicycles, not seven billion in millions of cars. Will the culling out start in 2012?
The most amazing theory is that the sun has a twin at the other end of our solar systems’ 26000 year orbit through the galaxy. As our sun gets closer to its twin in their oblong orbit, it speeds up, and this has implications for life as we know it. There are forces nearly beyond our abilities to comprehend that will probably have more affect on the planet than we will.
Over the next three years, as we get closer to 12/21/2012, public attention is going to be drawn to the date. This well produced DVD documentary is a great way of being ahead of the curve and understanding what is going to happen…to the best of our abilities. Informative and entertaining, 2012: Science or Superstition is a must for school districts and families alike. Extras include Terence McKenna’s Time Wave Zero and Tour of Palenque, Classic Period Mayan City. You can buy it at the website, www.2012dvd.com FOUR STARS
