“Wedding Bros” is a film that played at 2008 South by Southwest Film Festival. This film is the feature film debut from Michael Canzoniero and Marco Ricci, who directed a couple of shorts, prior to this.
The film is about Anthony (Brenden Sexton III) and Carmine (Dan Fogler), who for the past five years have been working at their family’s carpeting business. Working for their father has been boring; as he doesn’t want to change the way that he runs the family business. Then one day, while putting in the carpeting for a playboy and Long Island’s number one wedding video producer (Jon Polio). The brothers join his company and get into the wonderful world of wedding videography. While working there, Anthony meets a young photographer’s assistant (Zoe Lister-Jones). He tries to strike up a relationship with her, while Carmine is making mistakes with the equipment that has consequences for the two, as their boss is mentally unstable.
Going into “Wedding Bros”, I was thinking that this was going to be one of those stupid comedies with gross-out humor and no story. As the film went along, I stopped feeling that way, as I was laughing and enjoying this film a lot better than I expected.
Writter and directors, Michael Canzoniero and Marco Ricci make this film a fun comedy to watch. The duo did a very good job directing the humor, as it relies on more physical comedy than the over the top gross out and sexual humor, which is commonly found with a film like this. Canzoniero and Ricci also directed their actors very well, as both Dan Fogler and Brenden Sexton III both turned in very good comedic performances. They did a very good job with their characters, as they both made them very entertaining and funny. Both actors did that, by being interested in the material and having fun with respective roles. That’s what makes good comedies funny.
The screenplay was the most surprising thing about this film, as it sticks to the film’s story and not wonders off into becoming just another comedy that’s purpose is to gross you out. I liked how they treat the story, as important as the film’s humor. It makes everything much better. Canzoniero and Ricci also did a very good job with the whole relationship subplot. They handle it, by teasing it throughout the film. It made me very interested in that subplot, because I was into those characters and ending result work.
What makes this film work above anything else, is the two lead characters. I liked the characters here, as they kept me interested and made this film fun to watch. It made me very engaged with the story, as they were very likable. That’s needed in a comedy for everything to work. You can have good humor and a good story, but if you don’t dig the characters, then it effects your enjoyment for the film.
This is a film that I would say is much better than “Brides War” and “I Love You, Man” to come out, this year “Wedding Bros” is a funny comedy with two very funny performances and laugh out loud moments.
