Slasher films usually follow a simple formula, in which you have your killer stalking innocent teens that are enjoying the time of their lives, before the killer ruins everything. Normally I see a lot of these films every year, but this film uses this formula but doesn’t exactly use it in the way it’s intended to be as this is one demented slasher film.
“Red Velvet” is a film about a deranged man (Henry Thomas) and a beautiful woman (Kelli Garner), who have a chance encounter at a laundry mat. During that encounter, they get to know each through the bizarre stories in which they use some fact and some fiction. Eventually, the deranged man begins to tell her the story of a birthday party, which all of its guests are being murdered. As the woman becomes intrigued by his story, is she entering into a budding friendship or becoming part of the madness of the story.
“Red Velvet” is a crazy and weird horror film that’s perfect for late-night viewing. First time director, Bruce Dickson does a very job with his direction. The direction makes this film stand out with all the weird imagery and long dialogue scenes. I liked the way he shoots his scenes, as there’s much thought in the process. By doing that, you the viewer are not sitting there and saying to yourself that this isn’t a boring horror film. This is the type of slasher film that David Lynch would direct. Dickson also does a very good job keeping your interest during the dialogue scenes between the main characters, by having both Henry Thomas and Kelli Garner develop a chemistry that makes the dialogue scenes work and keeps you interested in the story that Thomas’s character is telling. It makes this film, a creative and interesting slasher film.
Anthony Burns and Joe Moe’s screenplay was also different from the typical slasher film. The thing that I admire most about this film, the fact that you had writers that put some thought into making an entertaining film using one the most basic formula that you could use when writing your horror screenplay. What made this film different from other slasher films, the fact the story felt like two different stories. The first story focuses on a woman in a troubled relationship, who strikes a conversation and kind of a bond with her creepy neighbor during the afternoon. The other story consists of the neighbor telling her the story of a bunch of twenty something kids, who get stalked by a killer with the weirdest looking mask ever. Those stories work because it gets you into the flow of the film, to the point that you can forgive the writers for some of the film’s cheesy dialogue. Burns and Moe also do a good injecting weird humor into both of the stories, as it makes the stories fit together. They also did a great job creating the film’s murderer. They do that, by making him all bizarre looking, as the murderer is one of the most bizarre looking slashers that I’ve ever seen. That’s saying a lot, after seeing countless numbers of slasher films.
Red Velvet is a bizarre and entertaining horror film that you’ll have fun watching until the lights go out.
