Plot Synopsis:
2012 is here. Hopefully it will be a better year movie wise, as last year was disappointing. My first review of 2012 is the direct to Blu-Ray film, “Sinners and Saints”. Normally when you hear the words direct to DVD or direct to Blu-Ray, you normally think that this film must be bad. It’s not the case here.
“Sinners and Saints” is about Sean Riley (Jonny Strong), a troubled New Orleans Cop who is investigate a series of grisly murders. The case begins to get personal, when one of his friends (Sean Patrick Flannery) is involved in some way with the killings. This leads Riley to uncover a conspiracy with the military. This ignites a war between local New Orleans gangs and a team of vicious mercenaries As the city begins to spiral into chaos, detective Sean Riley must find the killers behind the murders before they find him. The film also co-stars Kevin Philips, Costas Mandylor,
Film Review:
“Sinners and Saints” is a very action packed film that keeps you on the edge of the seat. Co-Writer and Director William Kaufman does a very good job making this very entertaining. One of the things that I liked about his direction, the way he directs all of the action sequences. I liked how, Kaufman makes the action come off as intense and fast paced. The action sequences work, because the way they were planned. He takes his time working with his stunt and fight coordinators to plan and execute some very action packed sequences. They come off as intense and grabs your interest, as a viewer. You need stuff like that for an action film to be entertaining. The other thing that makes this good, the performances. Kaufman does a very good job getting the performance to work, when the action dies down. He does a good job getting it from the film’s lead Johnny Strong and the rest of the cast. It builds the tension and adrenalin to those scenes. By doing that, you don’t become bored waiting for the next action sequence.
The screenplay written by Kauffman and writer Jay Moess was very good for a direct to Blu-Ray action film. One of the things that they do well, they focus and develop the main character. They do a good job spending time to get to know the main character. I liked how the writers gave the character a back story that makes him one of those characters, who is about to go over the edge. It makes the character interesting and makes some of the dramatic scenes work. The other thing that I liked about this screenplay was the tone of the film. This film could’ve been one of the those straight up action films, but the writers here go more of a gritty tone. You could easily tell that this film was going to have a gritty tone from the beginning, especially when the main character is sadden over the death of his son. It’s little things like that makes the story interesting, when don’t have action sequences going. It makes for more of a better product and that’s what I want to see in an action film.
Blu-Ray Extras:
If you’re a fan of extras, your going to be disappointment. There isn’t much in the way of extras. There is a three and a half minute behind the scenes featurette that feels like an anatomy of a scene and seven minutes of deleted scenes. It very disappointing with the talents like Johnny Strong, Costas Mandylor, Sean Patrick Flanery, and Tom Berenger that you don’t hear their perspective on their characters and the production of the film, which is very disappointing.
Final Summary:
“Sinners and Saints” is one of the those films that surprises you. The film has a lot of action and a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. A must for action fans.
Review Rating: Four Stars
