Recently, I had the chance to chat with co director Michael A Hoffman about “Girls Gone Dead, which you can find in the interviews section. Now, here are my thoughts on the film.
The film is follows a group of sexy women, who are out on spring break and haven’t seen each other for a while. They hope to have some wild fun and have a time that they will never forget. But someone is stalking them. Soon, a sadistic killer with a medieval war hammer has targeted them. The young women must find a way outsmart this killer before they end becoming the killer’s latest victims. The film features cameos from WWE hall of famer Jerry Lawler, Linnea Quigley (Return of the Living Dead, Night of the Demons), adult film star Ron Jeremy, Al Sapienza (Saw V) with Bettlejuice and Sal the Stockbroker from the Howard Stern show.
“Girls Gone Dead” is a wild and crazy film that’s filled with blood, boobs and a fun story. One of the things that make this film work very well for me was the fact that the pace of the film. It moves at a very good pace for a 105 minute horror film. Hoffman’s editing here was very good. He does a very good job editing certain aspects of the film to make the death scenes and story work within the context of the film. It made everything fun, so that you’re interested in the film and you’re not waiting for the next topless or bloody death scene.
I also liked, the way that directors Michael A. Hoffman and Aaron Wells make the direction worked. The directors did a very good job directing the film’s important scenes. I thought, the scenes especially in the final third of the film were well executed. They do very good job setting up the death scenes through the camera work and direction. The scenes build tension to those scenes and help the film’s brisk pace.
The acting here was very good. The reason I say that, the women come off as likable and fun to watch instead of being annoying and dull. The directors did a very good job getting their cast to make to make their characters fun. It makes the film fun to watch. They also handle the cameos appearances very well. They don’t deter from the story, as these cameos added to the fun time that I had with this film. There are too many cameos to talk about here, but my favorites were from eighties scream queen Linnea Quigley as a owner of karaoke bar with a fake Australian accent and WWE hall of famer Jerry Lawler, who gets the biggest laugh in the film which I won’t spoil or give a hint. Overall, the cameos were very good.
The screenplay was written by Hoffman, Meaghan Jones, and Ryan Dee does a very good job making the film’s story and dialogue fun. One of the things that I liked about the screenplay, it doesn’t take itself very too seriously. The writers do a very good job coming up with cleaver dialogue and well thought out scenes. By doing that, it makes the characters likable and the scenes fun to watch. The other thing that I liked a lot was the fact they don’t overwrite all the scenes, especially with the topless scenes. All of them served a purpose and never did I get a sense that it was overkill, as they didn’t become the focal point of the film.
This is a must see, if you’re a fan a blood, boobs and crazy fun. “Girls Gone Dead” is filled with fun characters and a screenplay that keeps your interest throughout.
