Do you like action? Do you like Karate? Do you like righteousness? Do you like purple Godzilla heads coming out of cyborg women’s breasts? Then this is the film for you, as it has all of that plus 4 whole fried chickens and a coke. This film harkens back to the days of 1970’s Japanese television where giant karate-robots ruled, specifically to a series entitled, Denjin Zaborgar.
The film is about Yakuta Daimon of the Secret Police and his motorcycle/robot/partner/brother, Zaborgar as they fight the evil crime organization known as Sigma, headed by the nefarious Dr. Akunomiya, who attacks the town from his floating fortress that is inexplicably shaped like a scrotum. Sigma’s goal is to extract the DNA of city officials, scientists, and other individuals of power in order to create flesh and bone for a giant killer robot.
If you aren’t familiar with Director Noboru Iguchi’s films or style, then you may not like this film as it could be construed as over the top and annoying. I wasn’t familiar with this director, so I checked out Robo-Geisha on Netflix and was definitely picking up what he was putting down. If I was a cast or crew member on these films, I’d like think I would’ve had a blast because, Noboru seems like he has a lot of fun with how ridiculous his films are. The source material was also over the top fun.
I really enjoyed the sound design of the film, as it used a lot of retro sound FX. I’m a huge fan of classic anime from the 80’s, especially Voltron and Dragonball, and it definitely brought me back within the first few minutes of the film.
The 2nd and 3rd acts got on my nerves a little, because I wasn’t feeling the actor playing the older Daimon. Truthfully, it was nothing in particular as he played the part well, I just found the actor annoying. I also, didn’t like the “League of Smiles” either because, that was too over the top however, the League was from the original source material, so their inclusion was necessary.
To compare this to contemporary films is way too difficult as contemporary films are not dealing with this type subject matter. You could compare this more to Power Rangersor Ultra Man. To say this film is over the top is an understatement, as everything from the acting to FX is exaggerated. There is also a ton of sexual innuendo. (Pay attention when they insert the DNA and tell me what it looks like.)
Overall, I really enjoyed this film. It had a lot of fun, action, comedy, and heart. I was smiling constantly and repeating, “Oh come on!” followed by hearty laughter. But I implore you, to prepare for the amount of ridiculousness, I suggest checking out 1 or 2 more films by Noboru Iguchi just to get yourself ready, as the average viewer may not get it and be annoyed.
