“What happens in Vegas, gets buried on Zyzzyx Road.”

This film stars Katherine Heigl (Grey’s Anatomy/Knocked Up), Leo Grillo (Deirdre’s Party. And also resembles Shatner, I might add), and Tom Sizemore (Natural Born Killers/Saving Private Ryan).

It’s about Grant (Grillo), who meets Marissa (Heigl) in Las Vegas and they have a weeklong, torrid, love affair.

One night, Marissa’s boyfriend, Joey (Sizemore), breaks into the seedy motel, where Grant and Marissa are staying, and attempts to violently end the affair, only things don’t go his way when he is thwarted by Grant and a “back massager”.

Convinced he must dispose of the body and put all of this behind him, Grant puts Joey’s body in the trunk of his car, and he and Marissa drive out to Zyzzyx Road, which is in the middle of nowhere, to bury the body, only to have things go awry shortly after they arrive.

This film was done with a very minimal cast of four including Rickey Medlocke (Lynyrd Skynyrd), and was very interesting all the way through as it gives off some very David Lynch vibes.  The actors all meshed very well together and were very believable.  Heigl plays a very seductive woman and is very easy on the eyes, Grillo plays a seemingly unassuming nice family man, and Sizemore plays the over the top jealous guy which is not really a stretch for him.

The script was pretty solid, a very good “what’s really going on” type of story as Grant keeps wrestling with reality and hallucinations.

The D.P., David Klein (Zach and Miri/Red State as well as other Kevin Smith films), did a fantastic job.  The lighting was great and the differences between the point of views Grillo and Heigl were very jarring, but in a good way, as from Grillo’s point of view, everything is very bright and surreal and steady, but from Heigl’s point of view, everything is darker and handheld.  Each view leaves you guessing as to which is real.

This film has some good twists and turns and kept my attention and will keep the viewer guessing until the end.

7/10
