“Not Suitable for Children” is one of those films that caught my interest, when I first heard about. The film stars Ryan Kwanten from the HBO series “True Blood”. Still, I was still worried considering that this was being released by Well Go USA. The last time I watched a comedy (General Education) Well Go USA, it was not a good experience. Nevertheless, I still wanted to check this film out.

The film is about a partygoer Jonah (Kwanten), who is a ladies man and lives with his best friend Gus (Ryan Corr) and Stevie (Sarah Snook). His lifestyle takes a serious turn, when he discovers a lump during one of his one night stands. Johan finds out that he has testicular cancer. His treatment will leave him infertile. Johan realizes at that moment that he wants to be a dad. His attempts at the sperm bank become a complete failure and Johan realizes the only chance to become a dad is to find a woman that is willing to have his child. Through ex-girlfriends, bad matchups and slip-ups, Johan begins to realize that the perfect woman maybe closer than he thinks.

I was surprised that I liked “Not Suitable for Children” a lot considering that I thought it was going to turn out like “General Education”, which was released last year by Well Go USA. I would go as far as to say that this has been one of the studio’s better releases.

One of the main things that I liked about this film was its direction. Director Peter Templeman does a very good job with the way that he handles his direction. He does a very good job balancing all the serious stuff with the humor. It made some moments work very well and made the film interesting. The other thing that Templeman does very well is to make the performances work. I thought the performances were the best thing about this film. Both Ryan Kwanten and Sarah Snook did a very good job making their performances very good and work within the story. They both developed chemistry with each other and making their characters interesting. It made me interested in the characters and story.

“Not Suitable for Children” also has a very good screenplay. Writer Michael Lewis does a very good job with the tone of his screenplay. I liked how, he was able to balance the serious nature of the main character’s illness and the film’s humor. It made for some good scenes that kept your interest in the story. The other thing that this screenplay does well, it develops its characters. I liked how Lewis does a very good job focusing on the characters during the course of the film. It made both the story and the characters interesting enough that you were invested in them by the end of the film.

“Not Suitable for Children” does a very good job balances its tone and the way the main characters are developed. With good direction from Peter Templeman and very good performances from Ryan Kwanten and Sarah Snook, this film was one of the better offering that Well Go USA has put out in a while.
