“Nightfall” is an Asian film that grabbed my interested, when I found out that this was a mystery, instead of a straight up action film. It was nice to see that this was going to be a different Asian film.

The film follows a detective, who is investigating the death of a popular master pianist. He quickly finds out the killer is someone from his past that was recently released from prison. The detective discovers that has ties to the recently deceased. As he gets closer from the truth, he finds out that this crime may be connected to another murder that took place twenty years ago. It leads to a path of lies and a shocking secret that threatens to pull the whole case down.

Going into “Nightfall”, I wasn’t expecting much with this film. I thought, it was going to be one of those nonstop action film. To my shock, I was surprised that this well executed thriller that relies more on storytelling than action.
I really enjoyed the way that the film was directed. Director/co-writer Chow Hin Yeung Roy does a very good job with the way he handles the direction. It helps enhances the film and its dark tone. Whether it’s the look of the film to the way that he directs the action, it kept me engaged with the film’s story. This could’ve have been a failure if it didn’t fit the film’s tone, but Roy makes sure that it fits perfectly. It made the film feel better than your average mystery film. The other thing that I liked about his direction was the way the performances were directed. Roy does a very good job making sure the performances keep your interests. He directs the main performances in way that makes you interested in the story and in the main character’s investigation. Both Simon Yam and Nick Cheung made the performances and their chemistry with each work. It made the performances good and it kept me interest as the mystery begins to unravel.

The screenplay written by Roy and Chi-long To was very good. One of the thing that makes the screenplay work, it had good development. The writers do a very good job making sure that the characters and the mystery surrounding the murder that takes place during the film keeps you interested. It made the story interesting through the various twists and turns. The other thing that makes it good was the fact the film keeps its dark tone throughout the story. The writers do a very good job keeping it consistent throughout. It made the whole mystery aspect work well. There are various twists that you don’t see coming. It kept my interest in the story and everything else that went on during the film. When a film does that, then you know that the mystery aspect of the story is working.

“Nightfall” is one of those films that keeps you interested through the story and the acting. It’s a suspenseful mystery that has a very well executed screenplay and very good direction.
