Seven years ago today, tragedy hit the nation when the largest terrorist attack in world history occured on American soil. September 11th, 2001 will be forever known as a day of national mourning.
9/11 will always be remembered as the day when terrorists hijacked 4 American airplanes, and crashed them into the World Trade Center Twin Towers and the Pentagon, the 4th airplane crash landing in Pennsylvania before it could reach it's target, The Capitol Building. Thousands of innocent people died on that fateful day.
What was designed to make us weak only made us that much stronger as a nation. And so, today, seven years later, we honor those whose lives were lost. This is not a day to debate on why it happened. Today is not a day to talk about goverment conspiracies... Today is a day to remember. Over 3,000 lives were lost in the World Trade Center Towers. Many people went off to work that day, and never came home to eat dinner with their families. Innocent people... all dead, at the hands of a terrorist.
However, today is not just a day to remember the innocent... We need also to remember the heroes. As thousands came rushing out of the towers, many went rushing INTO the burning buildings as well. 343 New York Firefighters died trying to help people out of the buildings. 27 NYPD officers were also killed trying to evacuate the building. These brave men died with honor for their country, knowing when they answered that fateful call exactly what it would mean.
Another group of heroes need to be recognized on this day, which are the most over-looked. And they are the passengers of Flight 93 which crashed in PA. Something happened on that flight that made it go down. These terrorists crashed 3 planes into some of our nation's most important buildings... They knew what they were doing. They wouldn't accidentally crash this plane in a field. Something heroic happened on the flight, and the heroes on it need to be regonized.
So today, September 11th, 2008, we remember the victims and the heroes, and our hearts go out to the families and friends of the loved-ones. In honor of all the lives lost, FilmArcade has created a special banner in honor of the vicitms and their families, and it will remain up for one week.
Even as this day is one of sadness, we Americans can also find some joy. September 11th only made our nation safer, and we can sleep easy at night knowing that nothing like this will ever happen again. Also, the attacks on our nation made us stronger. Throughout our nation's history, there have been struggles, dating all the way back to the Revolution itself. The Civil War, threats of secession... but the States hung through it. And today, 232 years later, we're still here. Our nation's reaction to 9/11, for the first time in history, truly proved the meaning of THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Because that's what we are: United. And today, on the seventh anniversary of the solumn occasion, we can stand tall, and say honestly will all heart and feeling:
UNITED WE STAND.
As for today's question of the day, I will just leave you with this: I understand that this is a sensitive topic for most people, including myself. So, if you feel comfortable, consider it a "Thought of the Day". You're not obligated to answer. Just think:
Where were you at 8:46 AM seven years ago today?
