WVPBS documentarian Bob Wilkinson’s Romeo Must Hang will kick off the 12th annual The West Virginia Filmmakers Festival on Thursday September 29 in Sutton, WV. The film is one of 8 films premiering at this year’s festival. The festival runs through Sunday October 2 at the Elk Theater and Landmark Studio For the Arts in Sutton WV. 30 films will compete in 7 categories for over $2000 in cash prizes.
Highlights from this year's festival include:
· Opening Night World Premiere : Romeo Must Hang/Night Of The Hunter (Thursday September 29 7:00 PM Elk Theater) WV Public Broadcasting Veteran Bob Wilkinson presents the World Premiere of his chilling documentary. The film tells the exploits and trial of infamous Lonely Hearts Killer Harry Powers. Powers, who lured his victims to their death at his Quiet Dell WV farm was immortalized in the classic film “Night Of The Hunter,” A WV-based film classic that many consider to be the greatest film ever made. Romeo Must Hang raises new and troubling question about society’s perverse and often baffling relationship with America’s first modern serial killer. A special 16mm screening will follow of the classic Robert Mitchum filM. Don't miss this night!
· Special Advance Screening: Memory Lane (Saturday October 1 8:00 Elk Theater) Wheeling Filmmaker Shawn Holmes much anticipated low budget thriller screens Saturday October 1 at 8:00 PM following the Awards Ceremony. The film stars Michael Guy Allen (Doughboy, Super 8) An orphaned war-veteran who journeys into the afterlife on a quest to hunt down his fiancĂ©’s killer by stopping and starting his own heart. This thrilling and stylish feature film was shot in and around Wheeling WV on a budget of under $300.
· The Fat Boy Chronicles (Saturday October 1 6:00 PM Elk Theater) Based on the beloved Young Adult novel by Michel Buchannan, The Fat Boy Chronicles tells the story of 14 year old Jimmy Winterpock, a 14 year old freshman struggling with obesity and bullying. Jimmy Winterpock at age fourteen is 5'5 and weighs 187 pounds. Outside the comfort of his family and church, life for Jimmy is a constant struggle. The cruel taunts of his classmates make going to school or playing sports a humiliating experience. Yet, he still manages to focus on his goals; to lose weight and win over the girl of his dreams.
