“Wrong” is a film that I’ve been looking forward to, since I first heard about it through various sites. It’s Quentin Dupieux’s follow up to the very entertaining killer tire film “Rubber”. This was one of those films that I had high expectations considering that “Rubber” was insanely good.
The film follows Dolph Springer (Jack Plotnick), who awakens one morning to find that his beloved dog has gone missing. Desperate to find him, he sets out to look for him. During his search for the dog, he ends up spiraling to the realm of the very absurd. He has deal with some very bizarre people including a promiscuous pizza girl (Alexis Dziena) a mentally unstable neighbor, a French Mexican Gardner, a unconventional pet detective (Steve Little) and the mysterious Master Chang (William Fintcher) who tries to teach him to communicate telepathically to his pet. A lot of very odd characters, if you ask me.
With “Rubber and now “Wrong”, Quentin Dupieux is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors. His two films so far have been so off beat and very different from what you see from many directors today. It makes Michel Gondry’s films before “The Green Hornet” look like mainstream films. If I had to choose which film that I liked the most of Dupieux’ two films so far, “Wrong” would take it easily.
One of the reasons for it was Dupieux’s direction. He does a very good job making sure how each and every shot looked very crisp. Dupieux makes sure each of the scenes look very strange and odd like. It made the look of the film stand out and made all of the strange scenarios work well on the screen. It never felt like you watched the same scene over. The other things that I liked about the direction was the way he manages to make the performances stand out from another. Dupieux does a very good job making sure his cast brought some personality to their characters. It helped made this strange universe work so well, as the actors did a very good job making their characters very odd and eccentric. It added some strange humor to the film, which made it fun to watch.
Dupieux’s screenplay is also far more superior then his previous film. What I liked about this screenplay was that he’s able to come up with some fresh that you haven’t seen before. Dupieux’s story is very well thought and well executed. The reason for that is the way that he comes up with these strange scenarios and make them look very odd and funny. It also helped made the story work so well that you’re having a good time. The other thing that makes the screenplay work for me was the way that Dupieux’s characters were written. Each of the film’s characters come off as very strange and eccentric. It helps with some of the film’s funny part, as the strangeness and oddness helps advance those scenes. Also, it made the characters stand out from one another. It’s what made this film fun.
This is one of the strangest films that you’ll see all year, but it’s also one of the funniest films of the year so far. I’m have to say, “Wrong” is an early contender for the best films of 2013. I highly suggest you check this film out, if you’re into offbeat eccentric films like this. It’s funnier than most of the comedies out in theaters right now.
“Wrong” opens in limited release today and is also available through various VOD providers.
