Repo: The Genetic Opera (2008): Darren Lynn Bousman directed this rock opera which was written by Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich. BUFFY alum Anthony Head stars as Nathan who is a repo man for the company Geneco which repos body organs and pay a high price if they cannot pay. Nathan has the thankless job and must also try to save his sick daughter Shilo, played by Alexa Penavega. Paul Sorvino, Sarah Brightman, Paris Hilton, Bill Mosely, Kevin Ogilvie, Zdunich, Sarah Power, and many others co-star in this violent musical. This is not for the weak of heart or those with a weak stomach. Also, please do not run because you see the name Paris Hilton in the cast and she really held her own in her role. Brightman is known for Broadway, most notably as the original Christine in the musical version of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and makes her film debut in this one. This has become a favorite of mine through the story and the music. I would love to see this performed on stage one day and maybe star as Nathan.
Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023): I just couldn't resist, no matter how hard I tried. Rhys Frake-Waterfield directed and wrote this movie based on the characters by A.A. Milne who I'm sure never envisioned this one. Nikolai Leon stars as a grown Christopher Robin who is leaving for college. Pooh and Piglet, played by Craig David Dowsett and Chris Cordell, go all crazy and embark on a very bloody and murderous rampage. Maria Taylor, Natasha Rose Mills, Amber Doig-Thorne, Danielle Ronald, Natasha Tosini, Paula Coiz, and many others co-star in this twist to the classic children's tale. There is no CGI for the characters, and they are just a couple humans in a Pooh and Piglet mask. It is essentially a slasher film and unfortunately no dialogue for Pooh and Piglet which I think might have made this better but who am I? I sat there like WTF the whole way through and was interesting to say the least. I guess all the classic characters are getting horror movies now.
Saturn 3 (1980): Stanley Donen wrote and directed this sci-fi film. Kirk Douglas and Farrah Fawcett star as the couple Adam and Alex who are stationed on a remote base in the asteroid belt of Saturn. Harvey Keitel co-stars as Benson who complicates things for the couple when he shows up and brings his giant robot named Hector which seems to have a mind of its own. This has some special effects that were pretty good for that time period and hold up today. Unfortunately, no one ever talks about Hector the Robot. A pretty interesting sci-fi movie from the era which I thought was worth a look and definitely worth it for Farrah fans.
Vision of Crime (1958): This is my short film for the week which was actually an episode of the short-lived anthology series THE VEIL. Robert Hardy stars as George who has a vision of his brother being murdered which becomes true. He knows the person arrested did not commit the murder and tries to help the police without telling them of his vision. Boris Karloff, Patrick Macnee, and Terence de Marney co-star in this episode. This was a series that was hosted by Karloff, and he would act at least in this episode. This show never actually got off the ground until the '60s when this was presented as three movies and then Shout Factory released it as a series. These were apparently based on true stories.
The Devil is a Woman (1935): Joseph Von Sternberg directed this complicated romantic story based on the novel by Pierre Louys. This starts out in flashback where Don Pasqual, played by Lionel Atwill, tries to warn his friend Antonio, played by Cesar Romero, about falling in love with Concha Perez, played by Marlene Dietrich. Despite the warnings, Antonio still finds himself falling in love with Concha. Edward Everett Horton, Alison Skipworth, Don Alvarado, and many others co-star in this film. This was rather ahead of its time when it came out I believe. Dietrich has named this as the favorite of her films. This is also the last of the seven teamings between Sternberg and Dietrich.
Dummy (1979): Frank Perry directed this tv movie which was written by Ernest Tidyman and is a true crime story. Paul Sorvino stars as deaf attorney Lowell Myers who takes on a murder case where the accused is deaf and mute. Lavar Burton stars as the deaf and mute Donald Lang who is being accused of murdering a prostitute. Lang also had limited communication skills which made it difficult for both defense and prosecution but Lowell was determined to give him a fair trial. Brian Dennehy, Gregg Henry, Steven Williams, Helen Martin, Allen Hamilton, Frankie Hill, Pat Billingsley, Holly Robinson Peete, and many others co-star in this tv movie. This is a good look at the system in this era, and the difficulty Lang's family had to get him a decent enough education. Sorvino is good as the attorney trying to fight for the deaf and having issues of his own. This can be found on Youtube.
Taken (2008): Pierre Morel directed this action film which was co-written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen. Liam Neeson stars as retired CIA agent Bryan Mills whose daughter Kim, played by Maggie Grace, goes on a trip to Paris and is kidnapped by sex traffickers. These people made the mistake of messing with Liam Neeson's daughter and goes to France at full force to find his daughter relying on this special set of skills. Famke Janssen, Leland Orser, Jon Gries, David Warshofsky, Holly Valance, Katie Cassidy, Xander Berkeley, Olivier Rabourdin, Gerard Watkins, Arben Bajraktaraj, Radivoje Bukvic, Nicolas Giraud, and many others co-star in this film. This was essentially the start of Neeson as the violent action hero. I am also very intimidated by Neeson who I would never want to anger. This is really the ultimate film about how far a father's love can go for his daughter.
The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery (1959): Charles Guggenheim and John Stix directed this crime film. Steve McQueen stars as George Fowler who is a college dropout and agrees to be a getaway driver for a heist. His own inexperience and his suspicious ex-girlfriend Ann, played by Molly McCarthy, make the heist more complicated. Crahan Denton, David Clarke, and many others co-star in this film. This is based on a real-life bank robbery which features bank employees and community members who were in the robbery when it actually happened. Much of this is the planning for the robbery and the issues with the crew. This is a breakthrough role for McQueen and was worth a look.
Annie Hall (1977): Woody Allen directed and co-wrote this comedy. Allen also stars as comedian Alvy Singer who is reflecting on his break-up with Annie, played by Diane Keaton. He starts to explore past relationships, his childhood, his anal tendencies, and many other things. Tony Roberts, Carol Kane, Paul Simon, Shelley Duvall, Janet Margolin, Colleen Dewhurst, Christopher Walken, Hy Anzell, Russell Horton, John Glover, Jeff Goldblum, Shelley Hack, Beverly D'Angelo, Tracey Walter, Sigourney Weaver, and many others co-star in this film. This is comedy the Woody Allen way is the best way to describe it. Much of the actors in this film make their debut on close to it. There is also a very amusing animated sequence in this film. This is one of the top ranked comedies of all time and defines the phrase "misery loves comedy".
Beautiful Boy (2018): Felix Van Groeningen directed this film which is based on the memoirs BEAUTIFUL BOY: A FATHER'S JOURNEY THROUGH HIS SON'S ADDICTION by David Sheff, played by Steve Carell, and TWEAK: GROWING UP ON METHAMPHETAMINES by Nic Sheff, played by Kue Lawrence, Zachary Rifkin, Jack Dylan Glazer, and Timothee Chalamet. This shows years of heartbreak and triumph of survival, relapse, and recovery mostly from David Sheff's point of view through many years of trying to help and understand his son. This also shows his realization of reality on what he can do. Maura Tierney, Oakley Bull, Christian Convery, Amy Aquinto, Carlton Wilborn, Stefanie Scott, Marypat Ferrell, Timothy Hutton, Amy Forsyth, Amy Ryan, Kaitlyn Dever, LisaGay Hamilton, and many others co-star in this film. This does a great job of showing years of an addiction and trying to get through it showing the addict and those around them. As mentioned, this is based on true events. Chalamet went all out by losing 18 pounds to make his addiction more authentic and had a doctor on hand to make sure the acting was realistic. I am sure just about anyone can relate to this film whether as an addict or having a friend or loved one going through it.
