Welcome to the 965th edition of my series. Soon, I will be making my debut in Connersville at the Imagine Performing Arts Center in MUCH ADO ABOUT MURDER. Dates and info for ordering tickets will be below. Also, in the first time in over a decade, I am going to be ring announcing again for a new promotion in Muncie at the Boys and Girls Club entitled KNOW YOUR AFFILIATION. Come see the father taking on the son for the GBA championship with The Notorious One Ace Mob taking on his son Ace King.
Little Shop of Horrors (1986): Frank Oz directed this film adaptation of the stage musical. Rick Moranis stars as bumbling floral shop employee Seymour Krelborn. He manages to save the struggling flower shop when he finds a strange plant which he names Audrey 2, voiced by Levi Stubbs, after his work crush Audrey, played by Ellen Greene. They soon get more than they bargained for when the plant turns out to be very murderous. Vincent Gardenia, Steve Martin, Tichina Arnold, Michelle Weeks, Tisha Campbell, Jim Belushi, John Candy, Christopher Guest, Bill Murray, and many others co-star in this musical. Martin is very amusing as the cruel dentist who is very cruel to his girlfriend Audrey. Earlier this year, I got to play shop owner Mr. Mushnik, played by Vincent Gardenia in this movie. The only version I can watch now is the director's cut which has an ending more like the stage version. Either version though is lots of fun with very catchy music and a man-eating plant.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017): Taika Waititi directed this superhero film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chris Hemsworth reprises his role of Thor who is imprisoned on the island of Ragnarok and is forced into gladiator games where he must go against the Hulk, reprised by Mark Ruffalo. Thor finally gets through to Hulk to help him escape Ragnarok along with the reluctant help of Loki, reprised by Tom Hiddleston, and Valkyrie, played by Tessa Thompson. It is a race against time as Thor must destroy his evil, older sister Hela, played by Cate Blanchett. Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban, Anthony Hopkins, Benedict Cumberbatch, Taika Waititi, Rachel House, Clancy Brown, Tadanobu Asano, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, and many others co-star in this Marvel film. This is my favorite of the Thor films and ranks up in the MCU solo films. Goldblum was very amusing as Grandmaster and Blanchett was great as a villain. The music score from Mark Mothersbaugh also helps the movie a lot.
Child's Play (1988): Tom Holland directed and co-wrote this horror film. Alex Vincent stars as the six-year-old Andy whose mother Karen, played by Catherine Hicks, buys him one of the popular good guy dolls. Karen gets it from someone on the street, and it turns out that the killer Charles Lee Ray, played by Brad Dourif, managed to transfer his soul to the doll as he was dying. Chris Sarandon co-stars as officer Mike Norris who tries to help destroy the murderous doll. Dinah Manoff, Tommy Swerdlow, Jack Colvin, Neil Giuntoli, Alan Wilder, and many others co-star in this film. This is the start of a very popular horror franchise. This has a good amount of gore and dark comedy with the iconic Chucky. This is available to watch on Max.
Within the Woods (1978): This is my short film for the week which was directed and written by Sam Raimi. Bruce Campbell stars as a character named Bruce who accidentally desecrates an Indian burial ground. In the process, Bruce turns into a zombie and starts to kill off his friends. This is back when Sam and Bruce were making a lot of short films together and this would be like a pre-EVIL DEAD which would go onto make both of their careers. This is available to watch on Youtube and worth a look to horror fans of a couple guys who managed to make something of very little budget into a huge franchise years later.
Scarface (1932): Howard Hawks directed this gangster film which is based on the book by Armitage Trail. Paul Muni stars as Tony Camonte who rises to the top of the mob world in a pretty quick manner. Tony's brash personality and ego might prove to be his downfall in the end. Ann Dvorek, Karen Morley, Osgood Perkins, C. Henry Gordon, George Raft, Vince Barrett, Boris Karloff, and many others co-star in this film. Yes, the 1983 film of the same name is a remake of this one where the main character is renamed Tony Montana who is a Cuban drug dealer. In this one, the character Tony Camonte is loosely based on Al Capone and is very thinly veiled at times. This was during the time when they were trying to raise awareness of how bad gangsters were and this did nothing to glorify them. Muni was very mean to the core and does a great job. I love the remake but have always found this one to be every bit as good.
The Defender (1957): This is actually a two-part episode of the series STUDIO ONE which was directed by Robert Mulligan. Ralph Morgan and William Shatner star as the father/son attorney team Walter and Kenneth Preston. They are defending the 19-year-old Joseph Gordon who is being accused of murder and swears he did not do it. Disagreements between Walter and Kenneth make it difficult for them to defend their client. Martin Balsam, Ian Wolfe, Vivian Nathan, David J. Stewart, Arthur Storch, Eileen Ryan, and many others co-star in this in this two-part episode. Look for a young Edward Asner as one of the jurors in his debut. This got a little exposure on an episode of BOSTON LEGAL which starred Shatner, and they use footage of this episode as flashbacks. This is a really good courtroom movie
The Substance (2024): Coralie Fargeat wrote and directed this horror film. Demi Moore stars as fading celebrity Elizabeth Sparkle who is presented with a black-market drug which makes her into a younger and better version of herself. This younger version goes by the name Sue, played by Margaret Qualley, who starts to really enjoy her fame. The price for this is that they must alternate each week and they start having difficulty. Dennis Quaid, Gore Adams, Oscar Lesage, Christian Erickson, Daniel Knight, and many others co-star in this horror film. This was a great performance for Demi Moore and won a Golden Globe for this film. Quaid is also amusing as the Hollywood producer. This was a very intriguing look at aging and the price of trying to stay young.
Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon (1942): Roy William Neill directed this film which is based on the story THE DANCING MEN by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce star as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson who look to help a scientist escape the clutches of the Gestapo. Lionel Atwill stars as Sherlock's man rival Moriarty who we can be sure is behind the scheme. Karen Verne, William Post Jr., Dennis Hoey, Holmes Herbert, Mary Gordon, and many others co-star in this detective film. This is a good story to watch on a rainy day. Rathbone and Bruce always worked well as the duo and good to see them going against the Nazis.
House of Dark Shadows (1970): Dan Curtis directed this movie which is based on the popular gothic soap opera DARK SHADOWS. Jonathan Frid stars as his iconic role of vampire Barnabas Collins who is resurrected from his decades-long confinement at his family's estate in Maine. He claims to be a descendent of Barnabas while going after Maggie, played Kathryn Leigh Scott, who he believes is an incarnation of his past love. Grayson Hall, Roger Davis, Nancy Barrett, John Karlen, Thayer David, Louis Edmonds, and many others co-star in this tv adaptation. This is a reimagination using some of the storylines that the series is based on. They use much of the tv actors to make this movie. This is a pretty compelling vampire film and I don't really think you need to know the series to understand the film.
Women Talking (2022): Sarah Polley directed this film which is based on the book by Miriam Toews. This takes place in a remote religious community with a group of women who were wronged by the men. They must discuss whether they do nothing, stay and fight, or just leave. They must look at the pros and cons of what they are discussing. Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Frances McDormand, Judith Ivey, Emily Mitchell, Kate Hallett, Liv McNeil, Sheila McCarthy, Michelle McLeod, Kira Guloien, Shayla Brown, Vivien Endicott-Douglas, Ben Whishaw, and many others co-star in this film. This is based on true events and is a very sad story. Unfortunately, the women had to really weigh their religious beliefs vs. reality. This was also very well shot in a mostly black and white environment.
Well, that is it for this week but continue on for My Own Madness and the Madness. Tell me what you like and dislike and stay tuned for next week.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D: End of the Beginning S1, E16 (2014, 45 minutes, 666): Brad guest stars in this episode as Thomas Nash who claims to be the Clairvoyant. Some episodes may not count for the Madness. I believe with the character of Mike Peterson becoming the cyborg Deathlok that this should count due to his very deadly ways.

Turbulent Skies (2010, 82 minutes, 66): Brad stars in this tv movie as Richard Devain whose technology on the plane to fly itself contracts a virus putting everyone in jeopardy. I admit, I watched this more for my middle school crush Nicole Eggert. This is not really horror, but I believe the virus in the technology should make this dark enough sci-fi to count for this contest.
The X-Files: Beyond the Sea S1, E13 (1994, 44 minutes, 666): Brad guest stars in this episode as death row inmate Luther Lee Boggs. He also claims to be a psychic and might have some important information if they can get him a permanent stay of execution.

Jewell is not a wild card but she fit into my scheme so she became a category.
Firefly: Safe S1, E5 (2002, 43 minutes, 666): Jewel co-stars in this sci-fi series as Kaylee. Simon and River are kidnapped and end up in a remote village forcing Mal to make a difficult choice. River is suspected of being a witch and is tied to a tree, maybe I can argue that for a point
Legends of Tomorrow: Progeny S1, E10 (2016, 45 minutes, 666): Jewel guest stars in this episode as Dr. Bryce when the Legends visits the future and find she has connection to one of them. The team is divided on whether to take out a 14 year old who will be very significant part of Vandal Savage.
Mothman (2010, 91 minutes, 66 1/2): Jewel stars as reporter Katherine Grant who is part of a group of friends that agree to cover up the death of a friend. A decade later, Mothman is coming after them.
-The group of friends could be a secret society as they form a pact to cover up a death.
The X-Files: Oubliette S3, E8 (1995, 44 minutes, 666): Jewel guest stars in this episode as kidnap victim Amy Jacobs. Mulder believes that the previous victim has a psychic connection and hopes she will be able to save Amy.

Kathryn is not a wild card but has a couple worthy selections to become a category.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Aftershocks S2, E11 (2015, 42 minutes, 666): Kathryn guest stars in this episode as the Baroness. Sky is still learning about her new inhuman abilities and feels guilt for Trip's death. Some episodes of this series may not count for the Madness but I think the inhuman element should apply. Also, the matter that either destroys someone or brings out the inhuman abilites should count.

Misha is not a wild card this year but found a few CW/WB selections that qualify him.
Charmed: They're Everywhere S2, E7 (1999, 42 minutes, 666): A young Misha guest stars in this episode as Eric who is being hunted down by a group of warlocks.
Gotham Knights: Night of the Owls S1, E13 (2023, 42 minutes, 666): Misha co-stars in this short-lived CW series as Harvey Dent who is just becoming Two-Face. This takes place in a Gotham where Bruce Wayne was murdered and his adopted son Turner gets together a group to save Gotham. This is the series finale which is more like a season finale. I kind of liked this show and wish maybe HBO Max could have taken this a little further.

Priscilla is one of our RIP wild cards this and is the oldest one as she lived to be 100.
The Flash: Pilot S1, E1 (1990, 89 minutes, 666): This was the much earlier series of the speedster which starred John Wesley Shipp as the Flash aka Barry Allen. Priscilla plays Barry's mother Nora in this series. This is not the usual story of THE FLASH that we know from the CW series.

Zoe is not a wild card this year but found some animated superhero selections from both Marvel and DC to make her a category.
The Lego Batman Movie (2017, 104 minutes): Zoe provides the voice of Catwoman in this Lego animated homage to the world of Batman. This might be my favorite Lego movie.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018, 117 minutes): Zoe provides the voice of Mary Jane is this animated superhero film. This introduces us to the Spider-Verse beyond Peter Parker.
