The organizers of the Fantasia international Film Festival send us word that "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" Co-Writer and Co-producer Guillermo del Toro will not be appearing at tonight's screening due to unforeseen commitments, but he will be sending an exclusive video introduction in his place.

We regret to announce that due to unforeseen commitments, Guillermo del Toro will not be able to join us in Montreal for the premiere of DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK at the Fantasia International Film Festival on Thursday, August 4.

Mr. del Toro expressed his great disappointment at not being able to attend and will be sending an exclusive video introduction in his place.

In better news, we are pleased to announce that Rider and Shiloh Strong will be on-hand at the Hall Theatre to introduce their new short film, THE DUNGEON MASTER, which has its Canadian premiere in front of DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK. This is Rider (CABIN FEVER, BOY MEETS WORLD) and Shiloh's second directorial effort, after the award-winning short, IRISH TWINS (Jury Award and Audience Award at the Woods Hole Film Festival, Special Jury Prize in the Action/Cut Short Film Competition, Best First-Time Director at DC Shorts).

Hot off its screening at Fantasia. "The FP" has been picked up for distribution. New distribution company, Drafthouse Films recently announced that they've acquired the US rights "The FP" The film recently had its International Premiere at the festival.

Drafthouse Films, the film distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, today announced the acquisition of US rights to THE FP from its July 30th screening at Montreal's Fantasia International Film Festival. Set in a near post-apocalyptic future, THE FP centers on two rival neon-clad gangs raging an underground turf war for dominance of Fraizer Park ("The FP") in the deadly arena of "Beat-Beat Revelation" – a competitive dance-fight video game. THE FP is a nod to '80s sci-fi/action genre fare and is directed by brothers Jason and Brandon Trost (Cinematographer, CRANK 2: HIGH VOLTAGE and the upcoming GHOST RIDER 2: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE), and Executive Produced by Jason Blum and Steven Schneider of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY and INSIDIOUS fame. Film District recently provided us with the offical poster and trailer for their upcoming release "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark", which is having it's canadian premiere at this year's Fantasia Film Festival. The Guillermo del Toro co-produced and co written film is a remake of the 1974 ABC TV movie of the same name. The film will be released in the U.S. on August 26th.

Plot Synopsis:

Blackwood Manor has new tenants. While architect Alex Hurst (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend Kim (Katie Holmes) restore their Gothic mansion's period interiors, Alex’s young daughter Sally (Bailee Madison)—neglected by her real mother and brushed aside by the careerist father—can investigate the macabre history and dark corners of the estate. The filmmakers behind the short film "Animal Control" recently send us over the official trailer for that film, which is playing as part of the SMALL GAUGE TRAUMA shorts program. The short film has played at such film festivals as the 2011 South by Southwest Film Festival, 2010 Sitges Film Festival and the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. The film has also won Best Narrative Short at the 2011 Calgary International Film Festival.

Plot Synopsis:

Larry works for Animal Services. His job is picking up road kill along the highway; his hobby is taxidermy. Socially isolated, his home is a sanctuary and his only companions are the animals he’s stuffed.

One night at work, Larry spots a dog, seemingly dead, just off the shoulder of a quiet strip of road. Not having a stuffed dog in his menagerie, he takes it home with him where he makes the shocking discovery that the dog, "Sammy", is still alive.

Sammy's arrival marks not only the beginning of a new relationship for Larry, but also the realization that animals should be preserved before they are dead, rather than after.

Plot Synopsis

A missing person needs to remain that way for seven years before legally being declared dead in absentia. Today, Tricia’s long-vanished husband qualifies for this terrible honour. Even while filling out the final paperwork, she keeps missing-person posters for her husband, clinging to whatever hope she can. Her younger sister Callie, a recovering junkie, moves in with her for moral support. They struggle to avoid discussing the elephant in the room. Their town has a higher-than-average number of missing persons. Much higher than average. Search posters for the hastily departed adorn trees and posts like pockmarks and everyone seems to know someone who knows someone who vanished into thin air without warning or return.

"Absentia": Official Trailer

IFC Films send us news that they've acquired John Landis' latest film "Burke and Hare" starring Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis. The film is set to hit theaters on September 9th, but it will be premiering on VOD and Sundancenow.com on August 5th.

There are a lot of sexual hijinks that goes on in "Foxy Festival". One of the films that's playing at this year's Fantasia International Film Festival. The film is directed by Lee Hae-young, who directed the comedy "Like a Virgin" in 2006. The film has played at Udine Far East and New York Asian Film Festivals, this year. Now its having its canadian premiere at this year's festival. Writer/Director Lee Hae-young will be there to host the screening on July 28th.

Word has come down in the local police station that in a not-so-subtle public relations display, the cops are going to double their efforts at keeping at least one particular neighbourhood — a nice, quiet, wholesome part of town — free of sleaze, perverts and indecency. Won’t the locals appreciate that! Not that Jang-bae is really the right cop for the job. He’s a total pig at home, awful to his girlfriend, and convinced that given the size of his mighty cock, the world owes him everything. Right around the time Jang-bae’s ego is shattered by the discovery of his girlfriend’s mail-order vibrator purchase, other naughty secrets are surfacing. When I heard about a major announcement regarding this year's festival on Friday , I didn't expect this would be the announcement.

On August 4th at 11:55 PM, the Fantasia International Film Festival will be hosting the World Premiere of "Final Destination 5" in 3D at the Scotia Bank Theatre, 977 Ste. Catherine West. Actress Jacqueline MacInnes-Wood will be attendance for the screening

"Pop Skull is film that was released on DVD last year from Halo 8 Films. It's part of spotlight highlighting the work of director Adam Wingard, whose latest film ""What Fun We Were Having: 4 Stories About Date Rape" is having it's world premiere at this year's festival.

“Pop Skull” has won grand jury prizes at the Indianapolis International Film festival and Boston Underground Film festival. It has also premiered at the AFI Film Festival and internationally at Rome Film Festival. Now the film has been on DVD for a couple of months now.

This shocking film is about Daniel, a young pill addict. He has increasingly become addictive to pills and drugs. His downward spiral gets ever more worst. He has to collide with deadly sprits that begin to inhabit his house and haunt him. Soon Daniel discovers, the home holds a deadly secret that was the scene of a gruesome murder. As the force’s presence grows stronger, Daniel must stop these forces or else those murders are doomed to repeat again and destroy his life.

There are few films that you would be guaranteed to come out feeling like that you’ve just been on one bad acid trip. This was one of those films. It never lets up, as this becomes an acid trip in the first few minutes and never stops. It’s one of those films where you’ll watch the whole film and be horrified or you’ll just turn it off and never look back.

“Pop Skull” relies mostly on Adam Wingard’s direction. The direction here was very good. He goes for a very chaotic approach, when directing and shooting some of the film’s most horrifying images. He makes the imagery very dark through using various techniques. Some of the scenes were either full of color or dark and very bleak. This is where the acid trip analogy comes into play. Wingard also blends some of the film’s images together to give its surreal tone. He blends them to give the viewer an experience that frightens your senses and mind. Wingard also does a good job making performances work within the context of the story, as they were very dark especially the lead performance. I was sold on the fact that his character is on a downward spiral and losing control of himself. The performance helps makes this film, very effective.

The screenplay written by Wingard, Lane Hughes and E.L. Katz does a good job creating a level of suspense and shocking images. One of the reasons was that the writers did a good job, they focus around a character, by going into the character’s state of mind. By focusing on all of his problems and how his addiction to pills has changed the way that he looks at everything, as it gives a frightening aspect into how addictions destroy people. The writers also did a very good job making some of the film’s scares works. The reason that they work, the images come out of nowhere. All of this bizarre imagery grabs your attention to the point that you want to know how this is going to play out.

This is a very well crafted and shocking film. “Pop Skull” is a frightening and visually horrifying look at drug addiction and how it destroys people.

The Fantasia Film Festival is proud to present the World Premiere of Frederick Maheux’s (THÉORIE DE LA RELIGION) highly anticipated ART/CRIME, as part of the Documentaries from the Edge section. By addressing the controversial case of Rémy Couture, ART/CRIME tackles issues surrounding representation of violence, fiction and censorship in cinema and on the Web. Online, the videos and photographic work of special effects artist Rémy Couture caught the attention of web users for their realism and graphic violence, so much so that a complaint was filed with Interpol. The arrest of the artist in 2009 launched a discussion in the media and the film presents not only the opinions of filmmakers and Couture’s live models, but also of the Montreal Police, criminalists and people from academic and political circles such as Robert Morin, Patrick Sénécal, Nacho Cerda, Rodrigo Gudino and Mario Dumont.

According to Simon Laperrière, programmer at the Fantasia Festival, ART/CRIME is more than a portrait of the artist. "This necessary and universal work offers an in-depth analysis of critical issues directly affecting the art community as a whole. The Rémy Couture case raised several debates regarding freedom of expression as a moral right. Citing this case as a high-profile and current example of an alarming situation, this brilliantly put together documentary is a reflection as eloquent as it is unavoidable."

ART/CRIME will have its world premiere Thursday, July 28 at 7pm at Concordia University’s J.A. de Sève Theatre of Concordia University. Director Frédérick Maheux, Rémy Couture and many speakers featured in the documentary will attend the screening. This will be followed by a vernissage of an exhibition devoted to Rémy Couture’s work at Foufounes Électriques at 9pm. On August 1 at 3pm, Frédérick Maheux and Rémy Couture will take part in the roundtable "Qu’est-ce que le cinéma de l’extrême? " – What is the cinema of the extreme? – at Reggie's Bar at Concordia University. Also appearing as part of this roundtable will be filmmaker FJ Ossang (DHARMA GUNS) and the Cinémathèque française’s director of programming Jean-François Rauger.

"Hello Ghost" is a supernatural comedy that's part of the Cine-Asia: Fantasia's 2nd annual Korean Film Spotlight that happening during the festival. The film is the feature debut from director Kim Young-tak and stars Cha Tae-hyun of "My Sassy Girl" and "Scandal Makers" fame.

Plot Synopsis:

Raised in an orphanage and adrift as an adult, moody, withdrawn Sang-man knows what life is like when no one knows you, no one can remember your name. Sang-man is driven to suicide out of a simple sense of hopelessness. Fortunately (though he might think otherwise), he’s not very good at it. His latest attempt, of many, finds him in the hospital on the brink of death — and yanked back again. Back to his old, familiar life. Except for one detail — or rather, four of them. The staff at the hospital suspects that Sang-man’s sanity is fraying, because he keeps asking about people others cannot see. People who can float in the air, expand their own heads like balloons and shift from place to place instantly. A fat chain-smoker, a lecherous old coot, an eternally weeping woman and a mischievous young boy. And it seems that these four phantoms — for it is clear that they are spirits yet to find their way to the afterlife — have decided to inhabit Sang-man’s body, controlling his behaviour on and off. It very rare for romantic comedies to play this festival. But it has to have an off beat tone or have references genre films or comics. "Prety Romance" fits that bill, as its full of quirkiness and comic book references. The film is directed by first time director, Kim Jeong-hoo and stars.

A writer with a capacity for creativity, in her assigned tasks and to no small degree in her self-image, Da-rim just lost her job as a magazine sex columnist. Lack of any such activity in her own life, mind you, never slowed her down, but now she needs to drum up some revenue. Jeong-bae, meanwhile, is a struggling, moody manhwa-ka, or comic-book artist, whose scriptwriting skills can’t match his capabilities at the drawing board. A publishing house has just offered 130 million Korean won (about 100 grand in U.S. dollars) for the best adults-only comic they receive, and Jeong-bae is eager to submit something. Following a series of dubious respondents to the ad Jeong-bae placed, he comes face to face with Da-rim. Sure, she’s egotistical, demanding and unpredictable, but she seems to be just the woman for the job, what with her initial idea about a sexy assassin who keeps men alive just to torture the erotically. The two creators certainly have their hang-ups, mood swings and shortcomings. Maybe it’s those similarities that are leading them, ever so awkwardly, down love’s path…

Plot Synopsis:

Sent into orbit around the Earth on a special mission, astronaut Lee Miller was mentally prepared for the long period of solitude ahead of him. From the moment of his arrival on the abandoned space station he has been assigned to resurrect, however, he has anticipated his return to our planet after a couple of months. That moment will have to wait until later though. Much later. After picking up incomprehensible transmissions of unknown origin, Miller is slowly gripped by increasing anxiety. Mission control is no longer responding. His last contact with them has been a recorded message informing him that something terrible has happened down below, hence the subsequent radio silence. Madness gradually seeps into Miller. Incapable of distinguishing the real from the imagined, his condition deteriorates when he comes across the diary of a soldier from the American Civil War. Miller has no idea how such a document came to be aboard the space station. Leafing through it, he becomes convinced that what its pages hold is directly connected to the tragic events occurring on Earth. In addition to describing harrowing military clashes, the war diary also describes the most important discovery in human history — proof that we are not alone in the universe.
