Troma Entertainment will take over New York’s prestigious Museum of Modern Art for a special “Troma at MoMA” evening on Thursday, January 9th when RETURN TO NUKE ‘EM HIGH, VOL.1, the film that marks the return of Lloyd Kaufman to the director’s chair and kicks off Troma Entertainment’s 40th Anniversary celebration, will have a special screening as part of MoMA’s 2013 “The Contenders” film series. After the screening, writer/producer/director and Troma founder Lloyd Kaufman will participate in a Q&A.

The MoMA event will preview the film’s New York exclusive theatrical engagement beginning Friday, January 10th at the Village East Cinemas.

Now in its sixth year, “The Contenders” series represents the best of mainstream movies, independents, foreign-language films, documentaries, and art-house sensations selected from major studio releases and top film festivals by curators in MoMA’s Department of Film.

RETURN TO NUKE ‘EM HIGH, VOL. 1has been selected for this year’s series, which also includes such critical darlings as Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave; David Lynch’s Duran Duran: Unstaged, J.C. Chandor’s All Is Lost and Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine.

RETURN TO NUKE ‘EM HIGH, VOL. 1 is Lloyd Kaufman’s latest Tromasterpiece. A hilarious, thoughtful sci-fi event film with themes ripped straight from today's headlines: the contamination and degradation of the world's food supply, rampant bullying and LGBTQ love triumphing over prejudice and violence. The film -- a revisiting of Troma's 1986 Class of Nuke 'Em High -- is in the same vein as other classics such as Class of 1984, Rock 'n' Roll High School and Carrie, but it's seen through the unique vision of Lloyd Kaufman and the Troma Team.

Welcome to Tromaville High School, where, unfortunately, the glee club has mutated into a vicious gang of Cretins. Chrissy and Lauren, two innocent lesbian lovers, must fight not only the Cretins, mutants and monsters, but also the evil Tromorganic Foodstuffs conglomerate. Can they and Kevin the Wonder Duck save Tromaville High School and the world?

Come celebrate Troma’s 40 years of creating some of the most revered – and reviled – films of all time!

Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead
Year: 2008
Director: Lloyd Kaufman
Studio: Troma Entertainment
Stars: Jason Yachanin, Kate Graham, Lloyd Kaufman
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Running Time: 103 Mins
Official Website: http://www.poultrygeistmovie.com/

Movie Synopsis:

"Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead" is the latest film, from the president of Troma Entertainment and the creator of “The Toxic Avenger”, Lloyd Kaufman. The film is about a military themed restaurant that decides to build their latest store on top of a native Indian burial ground site. Soon the spirits, from the burial ground, starts taking revenge on anyone, who steps foot, in the restaurant. The only people who can stop them are a mindless and not so bright counter-boy, his ex girlfriend, who dumped him to become a lesbian and a burqa-wearing cook. This is a zany horror film that is filled with musical numbers, comedy and extreme blood and guts gore.

Movie Review:

"Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead" is not for the weak of heart or for the easily offended. With that said, Poultrygeist is truly up there with “The Toxic Avenger”, as one of Lloyd Kaufman’s best films. Lloyd Kaufman still proves that his zany direction always works well with the material that he and the crazy writers of Troma Entertainment come up with. One of the things that I liked, about his direction was that he does a good job keeping the action moving, which is one of his trademarks. Another thing that he did well was to let the story of the film develop and not rush all the zany gore that’s always been common, in most of his films. Kaufman also does a great job directing his actors. He lets his actors make their characters totally likeable or truly hated. Another thing that I liked, about the acting was the performances by the film’s two leads Jason Yachanin and Kate Graham. Those two really had great chemistry with each other, which helps sell the love story subplot, in the film and makes everything that goes on, interesting.

The screenplay written by Kaufman, Dan Bova and Gabe Friedman was a very fun filled gorefest. The screenwriters bring a variety of issues, in a humorous way, like American’s obsession of fast food consumption, Iraq, and corporate America to name a few. Amidst all that, there's a very entertaining story. The development of the characters was very good, to the point that you’re into the film and its zany antics. Another thing, that was also done right was the timing of the musical sequences, into the film’s story. The screenwriters, time the sequences very well, by putting them, in the right places in the story and the lyrics to the songs make sense with the scene and story, of the film. They also do a very good job developing the various subplots like the love story and various issues that they address in this film. It helps adds to the zany fun that takes place in this film. The humor was also very good.. It was funny to the point, where I was laughing alot. The humor works, because the screenwriters combine the various horror and comedy aspects that are needed to make a film like this, very entertaining and fun.

Blu-Ray Extras:

For a small independent film company, this Blu-Ray is very loaded with extras. First, there are two commentary tracks. The first one is the production commentary track with Writer/Editor Gabriel Friedman and Director Lloyd Kaufman. This is a very good commentary track here, as this was very informative. They both did a great job going into the production aspects of the making of the film and the various problems that they had. It's nice to see a very informative track here, as there are tracks in the past, where its just there for entertainment value. Not here, both Friedman and Kaufman are very serious in the way that they talk about the production, as some of it can be very informative to those that are in filmmaking or looking to get into it. The second track is the cast Commentary track with actors Jason Yachanin and Kate Graham. This is one of the two Blu-ray exclusives on the disc. Yachanin and Graham do a good job going into the various stories from the set of the film. It’s fairly good track, as there was also some parts were entertaining too, which makes it enjoyable.

Next, is the eight-one minute full length documentary "Poultry In Motion" This is a very good documentary that highlights the film's production though the various mishaps during the production to some of the outrageous and fun moments that happen during filming. The documentary also provides a lot of detail to into the special effects of some of the film's key scenes. It’s also a good look at the world of low budget filmmaking, as Troma has been an independent studio that really does a great job in making their documentaries feel like an all access experience, instead of just another quick behind the scenes featurette that most of the major studios put out.

After that film, there's even more behind the scenes featurettes. The first one is an eight minute featurette called "Designing the Monster" This featurette goes into how one of the film's main monsters is created. Next is the "Recording the Songs". It's a six-minute featurette that goes into the behind the scenes process, when the actors recorded the songs before actual shooting of the film happened. "Shooting the Meatgrinder" featurette is next. This four minute featurette goes into the behind the scenes of one of the film's most gruesome death scenes. After that there is a five-minute featurette called "The Rooftop Reshoot" highlighting the NYC rooftop scene, which was inserted into the film a year after the film was shot. It goes into the filming of that scene. After that, it's another FX featurette called "Joe Fleishaker Gets a Head Mold". It goes into the process of how a head mold is made. The next featurette is called "Make Your Own Sound Effects" It's a twenty-three minute featurette that's very informative, as it goes into the process of sound effects are made. The last behind the scenes featurette is "Blow Me Away: Filming the American Chicken Bunker Explosion. This fourteen minute featurette goes into the process of blowing up the fast food restaurant that take place in the film, while going into things that filmmakers may need to know when filming a explosion sequences. All in all, the extensive behind the scenes stuff does great job highlighting the film's production.

After that, there is a nine minute featurette that highlights the film's NYC premiere and Q&A session. There's also another Blu-ray excusive featurette called "Chewing the Fat with Joe Fleishaker. It's a two-minute featurette that goes into Joe Fleishaker, who has been in countless Kaufman films. The disc wraps up with a four-minute short called "Chicken Ass", music videos from Count Smokula and Calamari Safari, four deleted scenes, two "Poultrygeist trailers and four trailers for other Troma releases.

Final Thoughts:

Even though, this is Troma’s first foray into Blu-ray. You couldn’t tell it was the company’s first release, as this is fully loaded with extras with great behind the scenes footage and informative commentary.

“Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead” is truly one of Kaufman’s best films, as it’s funny and contains blood-squirting gore that will make you think twice before eating your chicken tonight. Had to throw that last part in there. It’s catchy though.

Misunderstood upon initial release for its ruthless satire, audiences have since embraced TROMA’S WAR as one of the great anti-war films. The film’s controversial depictions of violence and AIDs, a subject virtually swept under the rug by the media and popular culture in 1988, led to a long battle with the MPAA that resulted in a butchered R-rated cut of the movie. For the upcoming special edition DVD, Troma has lovingly restored the uncut version of the film, making it more than a worthy follow-up to the critically-acclaimed Troma Retro re-release of COMBAT SHOCK.

After achieving major success around the world with the satires THE TOXIC AVENGER and CLASS OF NUKE ’EM HIGH, Kaufman and Herz set out to make the ultimate action satire criticizing Reaganism. Rick Washburn (ANGEL HEART) and Jessica Dublin (FELLINI SATYRICON) lead an ensemble cast of American tourists who crash land on a remote Caribbean island that is home to a ruthless terrorist group. With a multi-million dollar budget, TROMA’S WAR is the famed independent studio’s most expensive and elaborate production. Exclusive bonus features on this special edition DVD include Veteran’s Day: A Post-Tromatic Reunion, “Kill-O-Meter” (all the carnage of TROMA’S WAR with none of the story!), a commentary by director Lloyd Kaufman, vintage interviews with cast and crew, and much more.

“I have long maintained that TROMA’S WAR is our undiscovered masterpiece,” recalls Lloyd Kaufman. “Originally released during the 1980s, a decade of American Cold War machismo, TROMA’S WAR was our answer to Reagan and Rambo… We felt that ‘war’ was a word that seemed to be on everyone’s lips these days. We thought it would be interesting to drop some typical ‘harmless’ citizens of Tromaville into a war environment. We also had some things to say about who is ‘pulling the strings’ concerning war and terrorism.”

After 10 tremendous years of presenting the TromaDance Film Festival (www.tromadance.com) in Park City, Utah, Troma Entertainment recently announced that the 2010 edition of the festival is moving home to New Jersey, home of Tromaville and the Toxic Avenger. The 11th edition of the totally free festival will take place on April 17, 2010 in Asbury Park at the ShowRoom, Asbury Park’s premier independent theater, and the historic Asbury Lanes. Events will include world premiere screenings of truly independent films from around the world, a panel discussion with renowned figures in independent film, live music performances, the iconic TromaDance after-party, and this year for the first time, independent bowling!

Troma would like to convey its immense appreciation for the wonderful people of Park City. Without their support over the last 10 years, the TromaDance Film Festival would never have been possible. For 10 years, TromaDance fought the crass commercialism of Sundance on the streets of Park City. Lloyd Kaufman, TromaDance Film Festival founder, has stated “I believe that TromaDance has had a good effect on Sundance. The Sundance staff are much more supportive of and kinder to independent filmmakers. Also, finally, Sundance is actually presenting an increasing number of truly independent movies – not just those Disney, Miramax, Fox Searchlight, and other vassals of the conglomerates. Furthermore, now that Geoff Gilmore has left Sundance, stirring the soup in Park City just isn’t as much fun.”

Inspired by Trey Parker and founded in 2000 by Lloyd Kaufman, TromaDance is the first film festival wholeheartedly devoted to filmmakers and fans. Unlike every other film festival, TromaDance does not charge filmmakers a fee to submit their films. Entrance to all screenings is free and open to the public. There are no VIP reservations and no preferential treatment of any kind is given regarding admission to films, panels, or parties. The organizers of TromaDance believe films are meant to be seen, especially when it comes to new filmmakers. Art, in all its forms, is for the people!

Funding for TromaDance comes entirely from donations. The festival relies on the generosity of those who believe in its cause. Donations can be submitted online via PayPal, and tax-deductible donations of $100 or more can be submitted online via Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts services organization.

All films submitted to TromaDance in Park City will be considered for the New Jersey festival. The extended deadline for film submissions is now March 20.

Tromatized: Meet Lloyd Kaufman
Year: 2008
Director: Fabien Martorell
Studio: Martorell–Mouginot Productions
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Running Time: 95Mins
Official Website: http://www.myspace.com/tromatizedthedoc

The first time that I was introduced to Lloyd Kaufman and Troma films was in the early or mid nineties, when The Sci-Fi Channel was actually airing low–budget horror films, in primetime. They had a week dedicated to Troma films, which I believe the first three Toxic Avenger Films and Class of Nuke’em High 1 and 2. It was something that caught my attention, as it had the b-movie feel of the Full Moon Entertainment films that I usually watched, during that time. It made me glued to the screen. Now there are a couple of documentaries about Kaufman that are out on the festival circuit. “Tromatized: Meet Lloyd Kaufman” is one of them.

“Tromatized, Meet Lloyd Kaufman” is a look at one of the most prolific cult filmmakers of our time. For those horror fans, who have been living under a rock, Kaufman is the president of one of the oldest independent studios that’s out there today, in an era where the major studios have put almost all of these independent studios from the eighties and nineties, out of business. He has directed insane and entertaining films, such as, “The Toxic Avenger”, “Terror Firmer” to his most recent film “Poultrygeist”. The film features, some insightful interviews from famous personalities that worked with him to some of his friends, in the industry.

"Tromatized: Meet Lloyd Kaufman" is a very entertaining and crazy documentary, of the man who has directed such cult classics, as “The Toxic Avenger”, “Tromeo and Juliet”, right down to his latest film “Poultrygeist: Night of the Living Chicken Dead”. Director, Fabien Martorell does a great job capturing Lloyd Kaufman, as a fighter for artistic freedom, in era where the big shots in Hollywood are calling the shots. He manages to paint him, as a true filmmaker, who cares about truly making his own films, without corporate interference. Martorell captures the man, through his interviews, with such people as John Badham, Mark Damon, Tiffany Shepis, Trent Hagga, James Gunn, Stan Lee, and Roger Corman, to name a few. He also does a good job, in letting the people talk about their experiences with Kaufman and how he does things, as there was some great insight from those people that was interviewed for this, as I got to know, how much knowledge that they gain, while working along side him, which shows Kaufman’s true genius, as a filmmaker.

But the best thing, about the documentary was the interview with Kaufman himself. Having Lloyd Kaufman, in anything will energize your film. And it truly did, with this documentary. Martorell lets Kaufman open up, about his history of making low budget films, from to the controversial issues that he tackles to type of humor that’s made his films gain cult status. I liked how, Martorell also allows Kaufman to go into his filmmaking background, as it provided interesting things that I never knew about him, which helped shed a light, about how he's become, the filmmaker that he is today.

Tromatized, Meet Lloyd Kaufman is definitely a must see for all Troma and Lloyd Kaufman fans alike.
