I figured that since it’s late on this Christmas night, I would have a review of a Christmas themed horror film on the site for you horror fans. The remake of the 1984 cult classic horror film “Silent Night, Deadly Night” called “Silent Night”.
The film follows a deputy (Jamie King), who is haunted by the lost of her husband. She is called into work on Christmas Eve, when the town is preparing its annual Christmas parade. But she and the town’s sheriff (Malcolm McDowell) discover that there is a killer Santa on the loose. He’s intent on murdering anyone that he thinks is committing sins and not being nice. Now, the town’s sheriff and deputy must stop this killer Santa, before he strikes again.
Going into this film, I was very interested in seeing this film. I’ve enjoyed Steven C Miller’s previous films “Automation Transfusion” and “The Aggression Scale”. I had some expectation going into this film, but I never thought that I would enjoy it more than his earlier film this year “The Aggression Scale”.
One of the reasons that I liked this film, Miller handles the direction aspects. I liked how, he was able to make the film suspenseful through the pace of the film and the way that he directs the action scenes. Miller does a very good job building it, by making the scenes chaotic and shocking. The scenes felt shocking and made me question how film got an R rating with the level of violence that this film has. It gave the film its edgy feel. The other thing that I liked about his direction was the way that he handles the performances. Miller does a very good job getting the cast to really make their characters work. The performances really helped made the film fun to watch.
If there was one performance that I liked out of all of them, it would be Jamie King’s performance as the film’s lead. I liked how, she was able to make the character interesting. King brought emotion to the role that helped made her character engaging, instead of feeling very dull which could have easily happen with the character. It also helped make the heroine aspects work so well in the performance, Its performances like this and her previous horror film “Mother’s Day” that makes her a very good actress in this genre.
The Screenplay written by Jayson Rothwell did a very good job with providing some shock moments that made you cringed. He does a very good job in getting those moments to work, because of the way that he created some of those scenes in the writing process. There are some very effective death scenes that you don’t see in many of these horror films these days. It’s so creative that it brings a level of shock value that you don’t see often. The other thing that I liked about the screenplay was the way that it focuses on its main character and how conflicted she gets towards any situation. It makes the characters interesting and you’re interested in the heroine. That’s what helped made this screenplay work.
“Slient Night” is a gory film that is filled with inventive kills and has a story that keeps you interested. Fans of the original “Silent Night, Deadly Night” will enjoy this.
