Press Release:

Anchor Bay Films is proud and honored to announce the Blu-ray™ and DVD release of Mactavish Pictures’ MURPH: The Protector, a moving documentary based on the exemplary life of Navy SEAL Lieutenant Michael Murphy, whose extraordinary courage in battle resulted in the Congressional Medal of Honor, awarded posthumously in 2007. This stirring and powerful film will be available on Blu-ray™, DVD, and digital download January 7, 2014

On June 28th, 2005, Lieutenant Michael Murphy was killed while trying to protect his Navy SEAL team during an infamous mountainside battle with Taliban forces – now known as “Operation Red Wings.” In 2007, President George W. Bush posthumously awarded LT Murphy with the Congressional Medal of Honor, the first ever for combat in Afghanistan. “In his final act of bravery, he continued to engage the enemy until he was mortally wounded, gallantly giving his life for his country and for the cause of freedom,” Bush declared.

The documentary reveals the remarkable life of “Murph,” a son, brother, neighbor and warrior who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country and became a true American hero. This is his story and legacy. The film was written, directed and produced by Scott Mactavish and debuted theatrically in March 2013 during Medal of Honor week. Since then, it has gathered tens of thousands of followers. It was executive produced by Jon Sheinberg and Brian Aspinwall, and has qualified for the 2013 Academy Award® voting categories of Best Feature Documentary, Best Original Song, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing.

Drafthouse Films, the film distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, and Cinedigm announced today the joint acquisition of North American rights to the documentary The Dog following its premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. The Dog chronicles the real-life story of John Wojtowicz, whose infamous attempted robbery of a Brooklyn bank to finance his male lover's sex-reassignment surgery was later immortalized by Al Pacino in the 1975 Oscar®-Nominated film Dog Day Afternoon. A theatrical and VOD release is planned for summer 2014.

After screening Dog Day Afternoon in 2001,curiosity struck directors Allison Berg and Frank Keraudren, so they set out to locate the real man behind Pacino's iconic character and to hear his side of the story. An initial conversation with the very charismatic Wojtowicz lead to Berg and Keraudren spending the next 10 years with him amassing hours of interviews and a multitude of archival footage. The result is an immersive portrait of an eccentric nonconformist and his truth-is-stranger-than-fiction journey.

The film has earned high praise from its international festival screenings with Eric Kohn at Indiewire calling it, "a must-see documentary for fans of Dog Day Afternoon," and Daniel Pratt for Exclaim.ca praises the film as "one of the most remarkable retellings of someone's life caught on camera in recent years."

"The Dog was made over the course of a decade, but we knew it was something special from day one. The story was surreal, the characters unique. We wanted to let them be themselves and knew that audiences would feel that authenticity, as we did," says Directors Berg and Keraudren adding, "we're thrilled to be working with Drafthouse and Cinedigm. Their enthusiasm for the film combined with their expertise and forward-thinking approach to distribution is the best we could have hoped for, and we are very excited to be "unleashing" The Dog with them in 2014."

"Frank and Allison's comprehensive work is both a moving and hilarious one-of-a-kind portrait, serving as both a prequel and sequel to one of the greatest of all '70s American films," says Drafthouse Films Creative Director Evan Husney, "we are extremely excited for our favorite discovery from this year's Toronto International Film Festival to be our first acquisition with Cinedigm."

"We can't wait to share this film with both fans of DOG DAY AFTERNOON and anyone interested in knowing a man who was truly one of a kind," said Vincent Scordino, Cinedigm's SVP of Theatrical Releasing, "Allison & Frank have expertly captured the energy of 1970's New York in this thoroughly entertaining portrait of an unapologetic man who lived out loud and found himself at the forefront of a pivotal time in the gay rights movement. We're thrilled to make it our first joint release with Drafthouse.

Fantasm, a new documentary about horror conventions and the tight-knit community of fans who attend them, is currently in production under the direction of Kyle Kuchta.

Kyle Kuchta has a self-proclaimed obsession with horror films. Upon discovering the phenomenon of horror conventions, the young genre fanatic finally felt like a part of a community. He connected with like-minded individuals with whom he shares his love for the genre. Now he's traveling to conventions all across America to find out why horror brings people together.

In addition to legions of devoted fans, the documentary will feature insight from iconic actors and filmmakers. Interview subjects who have already participated in Fantasm include Heather Langenkamp (A Nightmare on Elm Street, New Nightmare), Tom Atkins (Halloween III, Escape from New York), Joe Lynch (Chillerama, Wrong Turn 2), Amanda Wyss (A Nightmare on Elm Street) and more.

Fantasm began as aspiring filmmaker Kyle Kuchta's thesis in pursuit of his film degree from Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts. "I wanted to do a documentary on horror conventions," he explains, "because I didn't feel as if a lot of people knew about them or the loving community that they are a part of."

The documentary was partially funded via Kickstarter. Further proving the enthusiastic support of the horror community, the project reached its goal in just eleven days. The 21-year-old Kuchta is currently working as a one-man film crew, serving as director, camera operator, interviewer and editor, among other duties.

Production will continue in March at the upcoming Monster-Mania in Cherry Hill, NJ and HorrorHound Weekend in Cincinnati, OH. Filming has previously taken place at such fan-favorite conventions as Monster-Mania (Hunt Valley, MD), Rock and Shock (Worcester, MA), Spooky Empire (Orlando, FL) and HorrorHound Weekend (Indianapolis, IL). The documentary is expected to be completed in May 2013.

Press Release:

Anchor Bay Entertainment and The Weinstein Company announced today the Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD release of BULLY, the critically-acclaimed documentary film that sparked a national movement that rallied people to stand up to bullying, hate, and intolerance. Directed by Lee Hirsch, BULLY follows the lives of five students whose stories each represent a different facet of America's bullying crisis, and the families that fight for them. A call to action, the film not only captured the attention of the country, but fostered a national dialogue about bullying, uniting parents, teachers, and students in the fight against the violence that has gone unchecked for too long in our schools. Timely and significant, BULLY heads to retail on February 12, 2013 for an SRP of $29.99 for the Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and $24.98 for the DVD.

TIME Magazine film critic, Richard Corliss, called BULLY “A movie your kids must see.” Wrote film critic, Claudia Puig, in her review for USA Today, “Bully should be required viewing for everyone, including parents, teachers, and school officials.” Added Rolling Stone film critic, Peter Travers, “Lee Hirsch’s film is a potent and provocative look at a problem that’s out of control.” Said People Magazine’s, Alynda Wheat, BULLY is “Powerful.”

Here are the facts: Thirteen million kids will be bullied in the U.S. this year, making bullying the most common form of violence experienced by young people in the nation. Three million students will be absent each month because they feel unsafe at school. Thirty percent of children who reported being bullied said they sometimes brought weapons to school. School personnel are reported to notice or intervene in only one out of every twenty-five incidents. Fifty percent of the time, when an upstander intervenes in bullying, the bullying stops within ten seconds. Bullying is a serious problem, and the solutions belong to us all.

The Bully Project, the social outreach campaign inspired by the film, has screened BULLY for more then 250,0000 educators and students nationwide, in a supported educational context, including curriculum and professional development tools to enrich the experience. From screenings at the White House to citywide summits in Cleveland, San Francisco, and Salt Lake City, the filmmakers have built a tremendous network of partners and experts. BULLY director Lee Hirsch, in an article for Origin. Magazine, wrote, “Sometimes it is the emotional experience of film and television that bring a cause to our hearts and stir us to action – they inform and inspire.” After seeing this film, leaders from the worlds of Hollywood, fashion, politics, business and sports – including President Barack Obama, Meryl Streep, Ellen DeGeneres, Johnny Depp, the New Orleans Saints’ Drew Brees, Tommy Hilfiger, Justin Bieber, Kelly Ripa and Anderson Cooper – publicly lent their support to amplify the message of BULLY.

From Sundance Award-winning filmmaker, Lee Hirsch, comes a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary following five kids and families over the course of a school year. Offering insight into different facets of America’s bullying crisis, the stories include two families who have lost children to suicide and a mother awaiting the fate of her 14-year-old daughter, who has been incarcerated after bringing a gun on her school bus. With an intimate and often shocking glimpse into homes, classrooms, cafeterias and principals' offices, BULLY is a powerful and inspiring film that every educator, parent and teenager should see.

The BULLY Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD special features include a Filmmaker Q&A, Featurettes, Celebrity PSAs, and Deleted Scenes. Note: Special features are subject to change.

Screaming in High Heels: The Rise and Fall of the Scream Queen Era is one of those documentaries that I’ve been waiting to see, since hearing about it. I’m a big fan of Linnea Quigly from films like “The Return of the Living Dead” and “Night of the Demons” and Brinke Stevens from “Slumber Party Massacre” to some of her most current work like “Witchouse 3” and “Die Delta Die”.

The documentary focuses on three actresses in the 1980’s, who found cult fame in various horror films during that time period. Brinke Stevens, Michelle Bauer and Linnea Quigley were known as “”The Terrifying Trio”. They would usually headline an upwards of ten films of year and fending off various monsters and pubescent teenage boys. The three actresses would also appear together in films like “Nightmare Sister” and”Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama”. The document remembers these actresses and how they were smart to play very dumb.

Going into this documentary, I was a bit skeptic that the sixty-three minute running time was going to hurt the film and it would leave me wanting more. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case for the most, as I enjoyed “Screaming in High Heels: The Rise and Fall of the Scream Queen Era”.

Director Jason Paul Column does a very good job documenting this time period in horror film history. I liked how the film was started with the director interviewing various B-movie personalities about the history and market of the B-Movie. It does a very good job setting up the three main scream queens that are focused in this documentary. When it came to the film focal point, it was a very interested look at these three actresses. There are various topics that Column goes into, from the actresses early day before horror film to the fun stories that they had making these types of films. It helped give you a sense of what the B movie horror landscape was like during the eighties and early nineties. The other thing that I liked about this, it also spend a little time on dark side of the business that each of the actresses experienced during the time as B-movie stars. It added something that was needed to get a full picture of their careers and explore that there is a dark side to the movie making business.

If there was one complaint that I had with it, I thought the film was short. It would have been have nice to have more interview time with Quigey, Stevens and Bauer, even though there is more interview material with each of the actress as part of the DVD extras. Even with that minor grip, I was still satisfied with the end result.

This is a must see, if your fans of Brinke Stevens, Michelle Bauer or Linnea Quigey. “Screaming in High Heels: The Rise and Fall of the Screen Queen Era” is a very entertaining documentary that goes into the highs and lows of the scream queen era.

COLOR ME OBSESSED, the first documentary about famed 80's indie-rock band The Replacements, will be released in a two-disc DVD set (with 6 hours of extras) on November 20 via MVD Entertainment Group.

Told through the eyes of fans, friends, and contemporaries, COLOR ME OBSESSED breaks from the traditional music documentary format of music and performances. Not looking to make a VH1/where-are-they-now style documentary, director Gorman Bechard took a unique approach, "I decided to present the band in a more iconic way," he explains. "I thought, people believe in God without seeing or hearing him but rather through the passion, faith, and stories of others. After watching COLOR ME OBSESSED, I'm pretty sure music fans will believe in The Replacements in much the same way."

Telling the band's story was a project close to the heart for Bechard. Like many who were weaned on punk music he latched onto this brash young Minneapolis band with fervor. Dubbed "the last best band" by Spin Magazine, their live shows could be miraculous or downright disasters. Their fans, unwaveringly faithful. As critic's darlings, their albums were wrought with angry guitars and passionate well-written lyrics that hinted at potential commercial success. Yet, somehow, the band managed to continually shoot themselves in the foot. Their relative obscurity was a motivating factor in presenting their story on film. "The Replacements should have been the next Rolling Stones," Bechard says, "And to the people who loved them, I think they were."

Combining over 140 interviews with rockers (Colin Meloy of The Decemberists, Craig Finn of The Hold Steady, Tommy Ramone, Grant Hart and Greg Norton of Husker Du, all three members of Goo Goo Dolls), journalists (Robert Christgau, Legs McNeil, Ira Robbins, Greg Kot, Jim DeRogatis), and fans both famous (Tom Arnold, Dave Foley, George Wendt) and not, Bechard delivers the obsessive tale of the most influential band you've never heard of, The Replacements. And though containing not one note of their music, COLOR ME OBSESSED is a documentary that really rocks.

Bechard is also releasing his Archers of Loaf reunion tour/concert documentary WHAT DID YOU EXPECT? on November 20. The film features the Indie rock icons playing two hometown concerts at Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill, NC. It premiered at NXNE in Toronto in June.

Press Release:

Jumping rope is indeed one of the most timeless and universal forms of play. Double Dutch is perhaps the most well known type. Brought to America by early Dutch settlers, it became a popular form of urban street play and gained visibility in the early ‘80s when it was associated with hip hop music and culture.

But modern competitive jump roping is entirely different. It has changed from a child’s game into a world--wide sport. Boys, as well as girls, are regularly pushing the envelope of what you can do with a jump rope. The sport is new and evolving every day. It now features astounding acrobatics, lightning speed and international competition. It requires focus, dedication and intense commitment.

Director--Producer Stephanie Johnes follows two top notch, but very different jump rope teams---The Bouncing Bulldogs of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and The Double Dutch Forces of Columbia, South Carolina. The Bulldogs represent the best of gymnastic freestyle jumping found of white suburbia, while the Forces belong to the inner--city African American tradition of Double Dutch. In different leagues, their first ever encounter comes in Harlem’s world famous Apollo Theater at the “Holiday Classic,” a rowdy crowd--pleasing contest which features “fusion” routines where Double Dutch is blended with hip-- hop dance and music. DoubleTime follows the rigorous practice period, takes time to talk to the coaches and the young athletes (age 11 to 18) who display an inspiring courage, skills and charisma. The images are electrifying, the energy infectious and the kids are inspiring.

Stephanie Johnes, a veteran director, and DP of non--fiction film and TV, discovered her subject while on a fellowship to study journalism and communications at the University of Northern California. “I was surprised to discover that I was living in a town that was home to national jump rope champions. Jump Roping is a great subject for a documentary because you truly have to see it to believe it. After telling friends about the project, they would inevitably ask, “So, are the kids on the team black or white?” I realized that within the same sport, there are two different leagues: one white, the other black. I decided to document these disparate worlds and had no idea that the two teams would ever meet.”

Johnes teamed up with her sister, Alexandra Johnes, who has produced several films for Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney/Jigsaw Productions (Taxi to the Dark Side and Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room). Her recent credits include Casino Jack and the United States of Money, My Trip to Al--Qaeda, Freakonomics and Magic Trip: Ken Kesey’s Search for a Kool Place. Alexandra also served as a production executive on Client 9: The Rise and Fall or Eliot Spitzer (Magnolia), which was short--listed for an Academy Award.

DoubleTime features an “excellent soundtrack” (Variety) with music from Keyshia Cole, Petey Pablo, MIA, Pete Miser and The Caesars.

Plot Synopsis:

This darkly comic, genre-bending documentary that exposes the corrupt business of selling diplomatic titles to exploit the lucrative and limited resources of war torn, third world nations. Filmmaker/journalist/provocateur Mads Brügger (Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner for The Red Chapel) uses humor in his jaw-dropping descent into one of the most dangerous places on the planet: Central African Republic. From each absurdly terrifying and hilarious situation to the next, The Ambassadoris a one-of-a-kind excursion from the man whom The Huffington Posthas called "the most provocative filmmaker in the world."

Financed by filmmaker Lars Von Trier's production company Zentropa (Melancholia, Klown) to expose the violence, greed and corruption of foreign businessman in the Central African Republic, Brügger developed a new documentary style that he calls "performative journalism," in which he creates an absurd caricature of a corrupt diplomat and arms himself with a phalanx of hidden cameras, black-market credentials and razor-sharp wit. It's part performance art, part investigative journalism, producing humor, shocking revelations and above all a tragic picture of a failed and corrupt state

I have finally found a great 2012 documentary to champion with Bruce McDonald’s “Music From The Big House.” It follows “the goddess of Canadian blues” Rita Chiarelli as she visits what is considered to be the birthplace of blues music: Louisiana State Maximum Security Prison (a.k.a. Angola Prison). What she finds is a number of inmates who find solace through their love of music, and this leads her to stage a concert at the prison. But unlike when Johnny Cash did his performance at Folsom Prison, Chiarelli performs with the inmates instead of just for them.

Cinematographer Steve Cosens originally filmed “Music From The Big House” in color but later made the decision to show it in black and white which suits this documentary perfectly. McDonald goes over the history of this prison which was at one time known as the bloodiest in America. The descriptions given to us of how it operated years before gives you a picture of what hell on earth must seem like. The fact that the filmmakers and Chiarelli were allowed access inside this prison is amazing to say the least.

We get a chance to meet the individual inmates who end up playing in the concert, and they are a fascinating bunch. It is not until the very end of this documentary that we discover what crimes they committed which got them sent here, and this was a smart move on the part of the filmmakers. By not learning of their crimes right away, we are forced to not judge them ahead of their musical performances. Some of them do allude to their crimes without too many specifics, and one in particular hints at how he isn’t apologizing for what he did because he’s not sure he is yet.

Some may consider this project to be a self-serving one for Chiarelli so that she can get good press and sell a lot of records, but that is not the case. Her love for blues music is never in doubt, and those not familiar with her work will be blown away by her performances in this documentary. There are also moments where Chiarelli questions why she is doing this concert as she’s not blind to what these felons have done to land them in jail. Still, none of it deters her from performing with them in what turns out to be a joyous occasion you might not expect to see from hardened inmates.

Speaking of the concert, we do get to see a lot of it here in the documentary. The musical numbers are utterly invigorating, and the audience I saw this with couldn’t help but clap along with the music. They even applauded at the end of the songs and for good reason; the music is incredibly invigorating to take in even if you’re not a fan of the blues. I haven’t been to many movies recently where the audience really got into what was onscreen, so this one is a must to see in a theater near you.

“Music From The Big House” is one of those small movies (let alone documentaries) that deserves a big audience to come out and see it. While Hollywood puts an obscene amount of money behind summer blockbusters, this is an experience that no huge amount of money could easily produce. While you could just get away with buying the soundtrack, this documentary invites more than one viewing as it is that invigorating to watch.

This documentary almost looks like it’ll be one of those great comeback stories of a fallen celebrity who gets their dormant career resurrected through the help of one die-hard fan. But while writer/director Stephen Kessler seems intent on reminding the world of what this gifted songwriter has given us, “Paul Williams Still Alive” is not that kind of movie. Instead it’s a story of a man whose life was run into the ground by a strong addiction to fame and drugs, and of his journey to a place of happiness and fulfillment he is ever so thankful for today. This makes “Paul Williams Still Alive” one of the sweetest and most life affirming documentaries that I have seen in some time.

Kessler is best known as the director of many popular commercials and “Vegas Vacation,” a sequel which would have sucked no matter who made it. He starts off this documentary recounting how he grew up being such a big fan of Williams and of how the songwriter seemed to be everywhere in the 1970s. Williams appeared on “The Muppet Show,” made numerous appearances on TV shows like “Beretta,” and he became an incredibly popular guest on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson. On top of that, Williams composed the music for “The Muppet Movie,” the cult classic “Phantom Of The Paradise,” and eventually won an Oscar along with Barbara Streisand for the song “Evergreen.”

Somewhere along the line, Kessler assumed that Williams had passed away at far too young an age. But while ordering one of his albums on the internet one night, he discovers to his surprise that Williams is still very much alive and still makes and performs music throughout the world. Kessler then makes it his mission to make a movie about Williams to let the world today know how much of an impact his music has had on us (and still does).

Kessler’s started filming Williams when the songwriter visited Winnipeg, Canada where a fan convention for “Phantom Of The Paradise” was taking place. This collaboration gets off to a rocky start as Williams shows a sharp reluctance to being filmed. There’s even a moment where Williams is singing in a San Francisco nightclub and gets the house manager to dim the lights so that Kessler can’t get a good view of him onstage. Kessler’s solution to this problem provides the documentary with one of its funniest moments.

In some ways William’s reluctance is refreshing because in a time where we are constantly flooded with reality shows with people becoming famous for the sake of being famous, Williams is not about to be a part of that phenomenon. It doesn’t take long to see that the songwriter is not the least bit interested in becoming famous like he once was (in interviews he has described this pursuit of fame as “pathetic”), and the movie becomes more about the kind of person he is today.

“Paul Williams Still Alive” does give us a brief biography of the songwriter who grew up with an alcoholic father who made him sing “Danny Boy,” and of how him being so short ostracized him from his classmates at school. Williams ends up blaming his lack of height on hormones being injected into him early in his life; this was done to make him taller, but it ended up having the exact opposite effect. After moving out to Los Angeles to become a film actor, he ended up finding success as a songwriter which soon elevated into a huge celebrity. The attention it gave him was something he soon lived for, and it would eventually become an even bigger addiction than drugs.

Eventually however, Williams warms up to Kessler during a trip to the Philippines, and it even gets to where Williams encourages the filmmaker to join in front of the camera instead of just staying behind it. Now this might have proven disastrous as “Paul Williams Still Alive” could have ended up becoming more about the filmmaker than his subject, but Kessler’s increased involvement proves to be a major plus. The relationship between these two men helps to define Williams as he is today; while Kessler constantly looks to the past, Williams only wants to look forward.

The one scene that helps define Williams reluctance to revisit his “glory days” is when he watches himself guest hosting Merv Griffin’s talk show. Clearly high on drugs and making an absolute fool of himself, the realization of what he was doing back then forces him to stop watching the rest of the footage. The person Williams was back then is so different from who he is today, and the pain that crosses the songwriter’s face over the embarrassing things he cannot change is impossible for him to hide. It’s no wonder that Williams wants to leave the past exactly where it is.

Near the end of the documentary, Williams even gives Kessler a whole bunch of videotapes he has in storage, having no idea of what’s on them. One particularly disturbing home video has Williams celebrating Christmas with his family, and then later going upstairs to film himself getting high. Watching this illustrates just how far down the songwriter’s drug addiction took him and, looking at him today, it’s almost like we’re looking at a completely different person.

Kessler however is not out to embarrass Williams at all, and his intention to bring the songwriter back to the world’s attention is a noble one. Williams is after all the man who wrote the song “Rainbow Connection” for Kermit the Frog, “We’ve Only Just Begun” for the Carpenters, “An Old Fashioned Song,” and “Rainy Days and Mondays.” Heck, he even did the music for “Emmett Otter’s Jug Band Christmas!” His music has been burned so deeply into our collective consciousness that we have to recognize the importance it has had on our lives.

Williams continues to make beautiful music while dealing with themes like love, loneliness and alienation, and he definitely deserves to be recognized for the countless music contributions he has given us throughout the years. Maybe not everyone has forgotten who he is, but we do need to be reminded of the music he has created. Besides, he got upstaged by Kermit the Frog all those years ago!

Some have accused “Paul Williams Still Alive” of not including more of the songwriter’s work which he has produced between the 70s and now, but this documentary is not intended to be a career retrospective. As the film goes along, it becomes more about how Williams is a better (not to mention far more interesting) man today than when he was as an overindulgent celebrity. These days he is the President of ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), and he has been sober now for over 20 years. He’s even a certified drug and alcohol counselor and at times seems to live more for that than making music.

With “Paul Williams Still Alive,” Kessler has given us far more than the average showbiz documentary. He’s given us a look at a life worth appreciating regardless of the embarrassing missteps that upended it at various points, and this is all accomplished without him trying to be manipulative or playing at our heartstrings unnecessarily. This is a warts and all documentary that doesn’t hide anything, and you will come out of it with not just a deep respect for Williams’ music, but also for the healthy perspective he has developed on his life overall.

During a time which sees certain celebrities desperately grasping for whatever fame is left for them to have, here’s a person who has found the happiness we all mistakenly thought he had when he was super famous. In the end, “Paul Williams Still Alive” is more about what it means to be happy, and Williams has more than earned the happiness he has today.
